Hey everyone, I’ve been doing some research on the immigrant history of the US, and I’ve come across two videos that might interest you. The first is part of a longer documentary about Finnish immigrants, while the second is a modern Finnish news crew speaking with some inhabitants of the state’s Finnish communities. Hope you enjoy!

  1. My fathers uncle or his fathers uncle went to America and worked with trains, I think he was a conductor or something.
He died there, if I recall correctly he died in some sort of work accident but I might be wrong.

Nevertheless my father somehow got the hold of his Hamilton pocket watch which in my fathers words was given to everyone who worked as whatever he did.

The conductor part might be accurate because weren’t conductors those who whistled when the train was about to leave the station? If that’s true then a accurate watch is a must I think 🙂

Edit: If you are interested I can ask his name and take a photo of the watch.

Also I don’t know if it is true or not but there’s a story that a guy from my mothers side died on the Titanic. He was working as one of those guys who threw coal in to the ships boiler. I think I once at least partially checked this story and found his surname from the list of the deceased.

  2. This is great. Can’t wait to watch these.

I’m from N. MN, third generation finnamerican. Been doing my own reading about finnish immigrants to my state. Do you see any information about Finns establishing cooperatives in MI?
