Sydney Scroggie is a real hero of mine. He was a passionate hillwalker, but was blinded and lost a leg in the War. He told someone shortly afterwards, “I can live without my eyes, but I can’t live without my mountains.” He kept going with the hillwalking even with his injuries, and would go out keeping an arm on a friend to guide him. I find it really inspiring how he overcame his injuries and managed to do that. I’m a big hillwalking myself, and the fact he kept hillwalking even though he was blind suggests what I’ve always suspected, that there’s more to it than just admiring the views. That there’s something intangible, some special about just being in the places we go to. He also just seems like a genuinely friendly, kindly and chill guy.
Men like Sydney and Tom Weir are who young men should be looking up to as male role models, instead of that dick cheese Andrew Tate.
