Hopefully it might prove handy in some instances. Only yesterday did I watch a van from a well known ISP race through a red light and nearly flatten some pedestrians.
And the gardai will then proceed to ignore almost all the footage.
This is all well and good, until somebody uploads a video of a girl flashing their boobs. You know we can’t be trusted with portals.
The article says that you will still need to make a statement to the gards though
This is a good idea with an overly bureaucratic implementation. You’ll submit footage and a Garda will still need to take a statement from you. “It’s needed for the chain of evidence” is a fine sentiment, but in an era when you can bank, pay your taxes and (if you’re in some eu countries) vote via online means, a way to collect that statement electronically would make it a lot more efficient.
The ANPR cameras now having good enough data to catch plenty of fish driving around without insurance etc is another example of this – rather than just doing as we do with penalty points and issuing them automatically to the owner of the vehicle, who can let us know if someone else was driving it; a Garda has to follow up each case individually. Even if we had twice as many Gardai this method of operation would get clogged up.
Good ideas, shit implementation, with some overly cautious civil servants finding the most roundabout way to do it.
Holy shit you are meant to report traffic crimes. Do the mods on R/irelandshitedrivers know this.
Every second video sent in will involve the M50 in some way.
This is good
Won’t be open until 2040…
Rats Out!
This is bad. I really don’t think it should be how we are policing.
I remember the concerns in London years back before smartphones about proliferation of CCTV and how it could be used for surveillance. We seem to be blindly accepting of it now without regard for it’s potential for abuse or in the wrong hands.
I’m not usually a crank but it just feels a bit too far.
Ps. The odd time I just throw my organic waste in the black bin 😲
This is right under the story saying Gardai are already overwhelmed by the ANPR cameras.
So more to ignore?
I’ll just dump up every single drive I take. 🤣
2026 deployment definitely an election promise.
If they give a bonus for conviction, I’ll put so many cameras on my cars.

A cranks charter.
We all know most reports will just be the permanently angry settleing precieved scores.
A Karen’s wet dream. That system will just get clogged up with over reporting within hours.
[Gardaí unable to cope with “sheer scale” of road traffic crimes flagged by ANPR cameras.](https://www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/2024/06/03/gardai-unable-to-cope-with-sheer-scale-of-road-traffic-crimes-flagged-by-anpr-cameras/)
