Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen Shines in the Champions League Final: Should he stay?

  1. First things first, yes, Maatsen’s mistake cost the second goal. However, he had a really good first half and more broadly, a very successful season individually. I saw a lot of discussion online regarding keeping Maatsen and keeping him at Chelsea as he can potentially benefit Maresca, which is echoed in the article, and I think the same too.

He showed a lot of technical quality and positional awareness as an inverted fullback. Reminded me of Zinchenko actually. But physicality is a point of concern I have. He’s got the pace to recover but I’m skeptical about whether he has the physicality to fend off transitions. That’s something Cucurella has despite his height.

  2. A bit late to be turning back for Maatsen now isn’t it?

  3. Maatsen has the technical quality to play the inverted full back position. Easily. He’s been great for Dortmund.

  4. Yes, Chelsea should keep him as he’s a really good player, but I don’t think that they can. They need to sell to buy and he’ll be pure profit, so I’m not sure that there’s much choice involved

  5. Is this headline a joke? The guy killed his team with two touches.

  6. He played well the first half, but all players from Dortmund did. The second half he made two crucial mistakes leading to both goals for Madrid. Thats not shining…. Tadic against Madrid in 18/19 would be a better example.

  7. Shining? Maybe in the first half. Definitely not in the second half.

  8. Not if he wants to play in the Champions League any time soon. Lol.

  9. Didn’t he make mistakes directly leading to at minimum one of the two Real goals?

  10. Did this guy watch the final? Maatsen was AWFUL hahahahah

  11. He passed a square ball for first goal, not exactly shining.

  12. He played very well in the first half but he had the half from hell in the second he gave away the corner for the first goal and didn’t mark Carvajal properly and then passed the ball directly to a Madrid player for the second goal, he is young so he can still get better but that 2nd half was terrible

  13. Liverpool should buy him.

£35m release. Can share the role for a season with Robertson then take over from him next season.

  14. Shines? Both goals were mostly caused by mistakes HE made. Let Carvajal escape for the header and made an awful failed pass into the middle of the pitch. I really like the way he’s growing as a player, but he played a horrible second half at Wembley.

  15. Madrid targeted him, they targeted his non existent defensive skills and his lack of physicality and height.
He’s a liability as a main starter and this will be exploited by the better teams

  16. Apart from that one loose ball that led to Real Madrid’s second goal, he had a solid game at Wembley.
