It is mad that the people who mind our children, help them with homework, and guide them to be school ready are minimum wage workers.
Remember people: minimum wage is the wage which if you were paid any less it’d be considered a criminal offence. That’s minimum wage.
In years to come we’ll rue the years we allowed kids be under the care of people paid barely enough to survive and not enough to care, raise a big part of an entire generation.
Childcare is expensive, but I also can’t get over how little the people providing it are paid. I’d love to see more of my taxes go into better funded and subsidised childcare and early years education. And I’d have no issue seeing part of that money go into ensuring the people who do the work get paid a living wage.
I remember going to a conference and a sectoral pay agreement for childcare workers came up. That was 6 years ago(!) The pay is appalling. It’s not a career anyone can stay in sustainably, which is just forcing people out of the industry. The “vocation” stuff really makes me roll my eyes. Sick of this idea that if your career is any way a “vocation” you should be paid badly.
Hup the workers, they deserve to be better paid. I’m just worried about the cost, crèches had to agree to a fee freeze for families in order to receive core funding from the govt. Margins are tighter than ever, so who’s going to cover the shortfall? Or are crèches going to be let go bust?
A pittance, to be paid in 12 installments of 1/12th of a pittance.
Crèche fees are obviously high enough; but I know I’d happily pay more if I knew the increase was going directly to the workers. They do Trojan work for a shamefully low wage.
