Maresca has every reason to “hand him a boost.” In the scenario where Sanchez stays with the team, he’s more confident. In the scenario where he leaves, they’ll be able to get a little cash for him (whereas if Maresca said that he wasn’t in the plans, why would anyone pay more than a bag of cones for him?).
There’s no reason to come in and criticize anyone when you haven’t even had them train under you yet.
