WaPo Report: Ukraine BARELY TRAINING Conscripts!

Ukrainian commanders are mad at the low quality of soldiers they are reportedly receiving from the ministry of Defense just how are they coping with this and what happens to a military when so many soldiers are undertrained I’m Paul US Army Combat veteran let’s talk about it okay so this is actually a story from the Washington Post um because I don’t want to give the Washington Post money um I found another uh copy and paste of this article God bless it this is the sketchiest website on Earth but it seems like it is the accurate article and the overall story is that uh Ukraine you may remember has expanded its conscription policy conscripting more soldiers and slightly younger soldiers younger being like 25 don’t get all up in a tis um but in addition to some other reforms allowing uh individuals with nonviolent offenses to serve in the military uh the Ukrainian troops are running into a different bottleneck while they have more people Ukraine has to figure out how to turn those civilian conscripts into soldiers right and this is actually way worse than you might even think right according to one Commander with the 93rd Mech he says some of their soldiers don’t even know how to disassemble and assemble their weapon if you’ve served in the military you know that that skill is essential for making sure your weapon is functioning and clean right if you can’t do that your weapon breaks I I I don’t know what do you do hand it to your NCO and Go sir my weapon broke uh right it’s a pretty rudimentary and fundamental Soldier skill right there also is reports that some of these soldiers are firing as little uh as just a a uh 20 rounds in basic training they interviewed one soldier who says quote that he’s making sure everyone Fires at least one box of bullets a day which they report is 1,500 rounds that’s a massive number of rounds it would be challenging to fire that in a day um what you might say it they might mean 20 one like box of rounds which is about 20 rounds um that if you fired that every single day uh after a couple weeks you would actually get pretty proficient with your weapon um and some of these soldiers are not coming just from the basic training right uh again this Ukrainian Officer says we’re wasting time in basic training um he says God forbid if there was a breakthrough near chavar we would have infantry who don’t know the basics they would be sent there he says just to die right and some of these stories are kind of preposterous right right while some Frontline commanders say listen we’ll take anybody who shows up he says many of these soldiers arrive ill-prepared right and he said actually many of them are not new conscripts many of them have served in the military since the Russian invasion began they profiled one Ukrainian soldier named Val whose job had been uh as a guard on a bridge in southern Odessa right this is a job he’s done every day since enlisting at the start of the invasion um and then he was told on April 30th he was transferred to combat Duty and within 24 hours assigned to the 93rd Brigade um he said quote it’s scary and nobody was really prepared but that is actually pretty good because here’s some a soldier who completed some level of training and while standing guard on a bridge is a far cry from combat duty at least Val is in shape motivated and committed to the defense of Ukraine right uh but you get a lot of even worse quality soldiers right for example they profile of reconnaissance unit right reconnaissance uh is a very complex and difficult job um right and many but many of the Scouts in this reconnaissance unit had just been transferred from rear assignments like our bridg guard and we’re given two weeks of preparation before they were sent into battle right and if you’ve ever done reconnaissance work you know that it’s very technical and very very difficult particularly because some of those roles required you to bypass Russian defenses very difficult right and while some of the new soldiers say that the Ukrainian training centers uh teach quote complete nonsense um that you learn everything on the spot this is also kind of true um there’s still fundamental Soldier skills that do get imparted through training events right uh they point out that for example one officer said a training center receives only 20 rounds per Soldier that’s almost no time to get familiar with shooting and operating the weapon uh he says there’s no grenades no grenade launcher rounds uh and that is the problem is that there’s no training system the officer said that actually Ukraine needs its instructors it needs to train the trainers the Ukrainian instructors need to be taught by NATO trainers so that there is a standard two-month basic training and can be condensed into one month there’s a limit to how hard you can condense these sort of things right and the current priority for the Ukrainian general staff is not to train in country where facilities can be targeted by Russian uh weapons um but to train those soldiers abroad Britain is of course the number one provider of basic training for ukrainians to date though France is considering also sending some trainers right and to make things even more complex a lot of brigades as we talked about are competing with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense trying to recruit their own soldiers directly One National Guard Brigade is actually offering as an enlistment benefit 60 days of training before being sent to the front line right which is kind of insane um and when you look at what sort of one of the the hardest things that a lot of these uh brigades talk about is in the article they say listen there’s a wide range of conscripts there are some conscripts who are motiv who say listen I want to defend Ukraine I I understand I’ve been drafted but like the soldiers of the second world war I’m going to show up and I’m going to do my job to the best of my ability right they’re often younger they’re more in shape sometimes they’re guys who say listen I graduated college I’m going to join I’m going to do my part um but the problem is that for every one person that’s like that most of the people who were here to defend Ukraine they signed up to defend Ukraine right now he says we’ve got people who are very old who have medical problems that they didn’t disclose or that the ministry of Defense isn’t talking about like people in their 50s and 60s who have back problems for example and struggle to walk with uh gear on um you have a lot of people who simply say I don’t want to fight I am not going to fight I do not care I will refuse any order to fight and what can you do Ukraine can put them in jail but that’s going to be a burden non taxpayers so a lot of these units say listen I want to recruit from my own pools right I want to recruit from my I want to do my own recruiting so that we can find soldiers who want to be here right and that is something we’ve heard this isn’t new uh to this surge but what I want to point out is that you know Ukraine aspires to get these soldiers in and out of training in a month four weeks to give you a perspective the US Army has at least been piloting a 22- we infantry training school right oset was is one station unit training so that’s your basic training which is 10 weeks long then you have additional job training which in this case is an additional 12 weeks so you’re looking at uh for infantry Soldiers the US Army says listen we want you to have 6 months of training before you get to your unit now I know if you’re thinking what I’m thinking you say listen what are these units doing it’s peace time when these soldiers get to their unit are they not training what what else are you doing why did we train so like the wartime Army did so much training all of the time how on Earth are soldiers arriving at these units and needed six additional months of training but that’s that’s not the story here the real story is that right the US Army says listen the the basics the basics are at at least 14 weeks right that was the original one 14 we infantry oset so to sit there and go listen it takes three months to get a basic infantry private ready to fight Ukraine says listen we got to parse it down you can parse it down to maybe 10 weeks maybe get it down to to two months but you know two and a half months that’s pretty that’s still a pretty tight schedule right and so for Ukraine to sit there and go listen it should tell you something that units are offering 60 days of training as a park as a contrast I think you’re seeing Ukrainian soldiers arrive at the front line with very very little preparation uh I think the fact that they that people are out here units are out here advertising 60 days of training that should tell you that the average Soldier is getting about 30 so about four weeks of training so less than half of what a again a basic private in a peacetime Army gets and remember in Iraq and Afghanistan like my guys in Afghanistan I had some people assigned to my unit fresh out of basic training they literally didn’t even go with the unit to the front lines or to the to the like to the AO um they literally flew in a bird afterward like they arrived like a month later like fresh out of basic training um and you know obviously they didn’t have they they needed you know we we buddied them up with an experienced Soldier to get them up to speed on the unit and how we did things but here’s what I didn’t have to worry about I didn’t have to ask myself does this Soldier know how to use their weapon right I didn’t have to ask myself does this Soldier know how to wear their gear appropriately does this Soldier know how to how to speak over a microphone or even worse I didn’t have to worry does a soldier know how to treat a wounded person right if they see someone who needs a tourniquet or bandage do they do they know what to do and so the fact is that when you had those basic skills down it became easy to say okay here’s the way our unit does things here’s how you Patrol here’s how you hold like like they knew how to hold their weapons we got to say listen here’s how we here’s our ttps for patrols right we do our vehicle Rally Point you know we use that as kind of our OverWatch or our cover position we have Dismounts kind of range out right all that you can do if someone has the requisit skills it’s sort of like it’s sort of like saying listen let’s say you wanted to sing a song in a different language well if the person already speaks fluent Spanish for example then it’s way easier to sit there and go okay I know you’re already proficient in English so here’s a song right Twinkle Twinkle Little Star right for example very easy to pick up if you don’t speak the language it’s almost impossible to get those Advanced skills quickly right not it’s not impossible but it’s so so much longer so that is kind of the situation that Ukraine is looking but here’s the thing a lot of times again the Washington Post some of these articles they don’t really understand military Affairs um so we’re going to talk about why things still aren’t as dire as maybe this article makes it seem but first of course if you guys haven’t picked up your strike gum you absolutely should right 90 milligrams caffeine in every piece 100 milligrams Alpha GPC zero sugar the equivalent of a Red Bull or Amp Energy in each one of these little pieces made here in the USA with high quality ingredients natural caffeine right extracted from coffee beans none of that weird lab grown encapsulated stuff um and we have a five-pack so if you’re interested in checking it out right you think it’s it’s a little over the top to order a single pack of gum I don’t blame you um and you’re like listen I don’t need a whole tray uh the five-pack is that sweet middle ground for you um but again if you to try it check check check it out basically because this is a made in the USA this is a a premium product it taste great especially relative to the other um uh dehydrated caffeine gums that you can find on Amazon um we don’t make any money on these individual packs like we I think we lose like a few cents um but people that try it I know like you guys are going to reorder and that’s the whole point so again thank thanks to everybody that’s ordered thanks to people that go on Amazon we’re also have all this on Amazon you should absolutely go go to Amazon search strike gum pick some up and leave a review because again that helps tell people yo this is the real deal this is the good stuff the made in the USA the 100 the 90 milligrams of caffeine in every piece um the real deal so thank you guys okay so here’s why I think this isn’t that big a deal it seems at least according to the Ukrainian general staff that Russian troops hit record losses in May Ukraine claims uh Ukraine’s Ukraine’s estimate which again Ukraine’s going to talk its book a little bit here but estimates that Russia had around 40,000 casualties which is interesting because this is the first time we’ve seen Russian casualties not the first time but this is one of the rarer occasions where Russian casualties have exceeded the 30,000 a month that Russia can recruit right so the Russian military uh if the 30,000 a month estimate remains correct the uh that means that the Russian military has been ated at a rate it has had a net loss if that makes sense right 30,000 in 38,000 out now losses include casualties some of those casualties will recuperate and return to the front line some of them will not um but the previous record was 30 nearly 30,000 in December last year and so you may ask yourself well how come Russia is advancing but it’s incurring such massive casualties well the answer is pretty simple right uh and that is because Ukraine is pivoted their strategy right this is why the Washington Post is like Ukraine’s losing territory right Ukraine is indeed losing some territory but when you look at the territory every day as we do on this channel you guys know that the territory that that Russia takes sometimes it has value right sometimes it is it has a military value you can see here the only Advance yesterday was here near natova Russian forces advancing across this Lake um across this Windbreak here uh seizing part of the far side of this Lake and we’ve talked about the fact that for Ukraine there’s not really anything to defend here in this peninsula it’s just kind of empty Turf and Russia’s likely trying to occupy these two um flanks and then sort of uh Advance into here right because Russia seems to prioritize square kilometers uh occupied but Ukraine’s sitting there and saying listen not all territories created equal right this this this is a farming Hamlet with maybe less than a dozen buildings and empty Fields Ukraine’s like we’re not going to sacrifice our valuable troops to defend an empty field and so once Ukraine sits there and says listen we’re here to defend the most important parts and we’re going to force Russia to come out of their defensive positions to leave their trenches and go on the attack and when they attack we’re going to hit them as hard as possible and that has been the strategy across the front lines right you can see here near Ultra datina where Russian forces have indeed continued to advance but you notice what they’re not doing they’re not occupying towns right they’re when they do occupy towns like archanges here it’s obvious that Ukrainian forces are fighting a controlled withdrawal right to Behind These natural obstacles right this this um Reservoir system uh for example right and you can see that Russian forces are again forced to cross big Open Fields um where on their way to nothing right here’s a here’s a classic example right here note this Advance here that Russian forces are pushing into an open field but you can see this doesn’t move them toward any discernable objective and this is like classic imagine you’re one of these Russian troops charging across a an open field into ukrainians knowing that there’s no strategic objective in front of you so that’s been the Ukrainian strategy is to sit there and go listen we’re we’re trying not to put ourselves in situations where we have to fight these kind of rigid defenses like a breakthrough situation and instead we want to create an environment where where Russian forces are charging into nowhere and we mow them down right it’s a it’s a simple attrition strategy and it’s very effective anyway guys that’s all I had uh be sure to like this video subscribe to the channel it does help and thanks to the colonel tier members and Lieutenant tier members at combat news.com could not do this without you guys see you in the next one cheers

  1. Excuse me but wasn't this Gum Salesman telling us a few weeks ago that the area displayed @15:28 was a "trap" being sett up by Ukraine ???

  2. We have to remember that even thought Russia is losing 1K soldiers a day, even at a 10:1 kill ratio, that means Ukraine is loosing 100 soldiers a day. With the shortage of ammo over the last 6 months (F–king Trump & Speaker Johnson), there probably wasn't a 10:1 ratio. That's bodies that Ukraine needs to fill ASAP to prevent the front lines from collapsing.

Sad thing is, that easily leads to a shortage of soldiers, and then you take what you get.

  3. You cant do a 22 week program during wartime if you are fighting a larger country. 6 weeks is probably as good as your going to get. Now if these specialized units can do 8 weeks, then thats really good. Might not be a bad idea to have the new recruits forced into non combat support roles as well while they are in training. Have them cook, do logistics, bridge guarding, etc. Have that reality as part of their other training so they can get a feel for a good routine. Then after they pass training with weapons and tactics they then could go to the front. Those units doing their own recruiting is smart. You get your pick that way.

  4. A number of your latest videos are so off that i am starting to question myself why am i even subscribed. 1. you are reading the article to your audience without any confidence whether it authentic copy or not. 2. no author assessment either. Where is your ground news and stuff? From my direct sources, each conscript undergoes 2 month training and a good ammount of shooting trainings in particular. 3. this one is minor but I've seen in your article, the author spells Kyiv as Kiev, which can be a sign of russian biased person.

Please do something to your sources or you will loose your core audience…

  5. Training comments:
    1. WW2. Eisenhower needed more manpower. College educated guys were in officer training. It was expected that the war would not be over until 1948. With no meaningful training, these men were fed into the line as replacements. They were not organized into units. Very high casualty rate.

    2. Vietnam. A high % of casualties were on the first 30 day sweep. So, US army adopted a program of 30 day, in country training with fake booby traps and ambushes.

    3. Mentor from 82nd Airborne asked me how I would train people. My response was as a sniper. The objection was raised that it would be too expensive. If you want cheaper, then train people like the Rhodesian Army Scouts: individual tracking, team tracking and mechanized tracking. Tracking teaches situational awareness better than any other approach. What is mechanized tracking? One tracker jobs ahead of an armored vehicle carrying other trackers who rotate in. Team tracking is in a compressed diamond formation. If you like, add a 5th person at the rear with 3 mile optics.

  6. "Here is a report from WaPo. I don't want to give them money, but I think the piece is important enough to base a video on it". —- Do you hear yourself?? Really??

  7. They had all the time since 2014 to build up a trained army.

They did nothing. Government corruption swallowed the money.

  8. So basically NATO is already involved in the war but not involved in the war directly. What difference does it make at this point? Putin can try and launch the nukes but will his subordinates actually obey the order to destroy humankind because one man did not get his way?

  9. Well, NATO does know how to train troops. Sounds like Poland or Germany or some other country near Ukraine should build a basic training and infantry school camp to train Ukraine's conscripts.

  10. I suppose Ukraine rations ammo to trainees because they just don’t have it! Every round they have has to be used against the Orcs. Thank the US for that. The U.S. Army has never trained recruits whilst under bombardment. During WW11, we (U.K.) cut back considerably on RAF pilot training. Many 18 year olds didn’t survive their first combat flight! That wasn’t driven by choice but by necessity. Get real, “combat veteran!”

  11. I was in the airline infantry in 2006 to 2009 got shot a bunch of times. But basic and ait went from end of May to sept 1st for basic and infantry school. Then 3 weeks of airborne school then 30 days leave then Afghanistan

  12. And like in basic there a lot of wasted time and a lot of stupid stuff. If they are infantry you can do it in 4 weeks. And then like 2 or 3 weeks with the unit to get the unit sop s ttp s so you can operate with the unit Like they can skip the parade stuff I wonder if these dudes reply together or get sent to didn’t units. Probably differnt units

  13. @CombatVeteranReacts My uncle of 57 with known hart issues got drafted this Sunday. He’s going on 3 months training. He is from the wide region of Kyiv. Luckily our family/clan is pretty patriotic and capable with guns. Many civilians like my uncle patrolled the villages with hunt rifles and handguns for Russian recons and spies and had some basic training. It’s still hard on our family but we all see it as an obligation and honor to fight for our land. BTW some people can’t be drafted because they do vital work, doctors etc.

  14. Heads up….there is no like thumbs up button, only thumbs down. I love what you do, even though I disagree with some of your analysis. Thumbs up!

  15. I want to digress a little. Actually little villages or towns with a few houses have little strategic value too, not much more than open fields. Even smallish cities soon to be reduced to rubble have little "strategic" value unless they are road hubs. In a World-War-I style slugfest where the goal is conquering all the enemy country, actually taking terrain if you can hold it has a value in itself. And attrition is the other goal. And while it seems Russia is suffering attrition worse than Ukraine, Russia can actually afford it while Ukraine can hardly afford its own losses.

  16. When fighting a war of survival with available real time and resources, you dont have the luxury of extensive training. One has to learn on the job. Ukrainians are Europeans/ Slavs with a history of warfare over centuries. They have managed so far and with indulgent allies they will continue to adapt and prevail over their challenges.

  17. Ukrainian training is more than adequate to be successful cannon fodder. Why are they complaining? Don't they know their place and purpose? Their job is simply to poke the bear and shut their whining mouth.

  18. Residents of Ukraine should prepare themselves for the fact that blackouts in the coming winter will last up to ten hours a day on average. Verkhovna Rada deputy Serhiy Nagornyak issued such a warning.

"This may be an average scenario," – quotes Nagornyak Ukrainian "24th channel".

According to the MP, the situation with energy supply in the country is super complicated. But by winter, according to forecasts, it promises to become even more difficult.

  19. I think it’s an interesting coincidence that this story is coming out just as France is debating sending trainers. I think there is some “shaping” going on here.

  20. Could that the fact that the marines operating in Krinky area, I believe have been trained abroad in England, have been more successful than most other units?

  21. It’s not no training, it’s on the job training.

Obviously jk but it’s true that alot of important things will be and in some cases, can only be learned out there in a combat environment. But they 100% need the basic skills before getting thrown into the meat grinder.

  22. Divide it up. We did this in school. You take a few skills and teach it to a few. The parts are taught to others and then assign them together to make the whole. They finish training out on the field of truth.

  23. Of Course the new troops aren't quite up to snuff yet. Green troops take about a year to become experienced Veteran troops.

  24. This commentator is a total idiot, and a communist. No recruits are trained coming in they have to be trained. All recriuts have to be trained. Is this commentator on on drugs?

  25. Cmon man. Get a clue. Their situation is dire. Theyre out of soldiers, they're out of ammunition and they're out of time. Send them some bubble gum.

  26. 10:56 Sir, with all due respect, as an Iraq veteran Corpsman, yes my Marines knew how and when to apply a tourniquet. Did they REALLY know how to properly field dress a wound…no. I would absolutely expect them to forget to clean it out with sterile water, or forget to apply a non-adherent pad below the bandage. Some of them literally wouldn't have been able to read the labels on the package for the pad. But ALL of them were highly proficient in fire & maneuver after SOI.

Maybe the Army is different, my only experience is with Marines (for whom I am forever thankful) but gotdang do some of them really earn the crayon-eater reputation.
