I have mixed feelings here: on the one hand solidarity is essential from a humanitarian and pandemic perspective; but on the other hand not so long ago there were reports of massive mismanagement of donated vaccins, including from the WHO (sitting idle, corruption, destruction, refusal due to religious reasons, etc …).
If us not getting a 3rd shot – if proven necessary – is going to make a difference I’m all for it. But to me it sounds like it’s questionable if it’s going to make a difference at this point.
I agree with the article, but I also read that vaccines from Covax are being refused.
So I don’t see harm of the West getting a third shot as long as everyone who wants a first or second shot globally has the ability to do so.
Why hasnt any African country developed their own vaccine? The GDP per capita of Nigeria has passed that of India, yet the latter has spent time, effort and resources in developing its own vaccine.
Are we just going to keep sending aid into this bottomless pit without them ever taking any agency in their own continent?
Why would Belgians have to die because other countries aren’t investing as heavily in the vaccines? I think we already aid 3rd world countries enough with money, but we shouldn’t risk our own lives for theirs.
Agreed, third vaccine is selfish and stupid because it keeps the virus around for longer: more variants.
Plus I don’t want to be getting sick for another day like my second vaccine so no thank you
Don’t we already aid poorer countries enough? If the corrupt regimes over there keep filling their pockets, how is that our fault in any way? Why should I be refused a vaccine in a country with some of the highest tax rates in the world because some poor Africans can’t get vaccinated? Shouldn’t I be able to buy medication and undergo specialized surgeries on my eyes either (I recently got diagnosed with a rare eye disease) just because some Africans are suffering? Sorry, but I’m going to be cruel here. Those countries have been in poverty for decades already and no matter how much money we throw at them, there have been no significant changes in the past decades whatsoever. Just one corrupt leader after the other. Look at what happened with Afghanistan as well. As soon as the American army pulled out, that country spiralled back a couple of centuries. What does all of that have to do with me? Almost a third of my wage goes into taxes, I should be able to get access to affordable healthcare in return.
Yes first world first as per usual, fuck you poor people! Shoulda been born somewhere else
