School headteacher: ‘Our energy bills have gone up to over £205,000-a-year. So that’s an increase of just over £67,000.’

  1. That’s a lot of money to spend on energy. Fuel costs aside, surely there needs to be dedicated funding for improvement of schools energy efficiency

  2. LBC and others are fucking infuriating to listen to, they always talk over or divert attention away from logic being spoken by a caller

  3. So many school buildings are 1970s terrapins / thin porta-cabins, single storey. About an inch or two of insulation if anything. If the buildings were triple-storied they’d have like 5x less outside walls and be 4x better insulated and the heating cost would be 1/10th!!!

  4. And I bet the schools funding hasn’t gone up, or has even been reduced, or in any case is less than 2011 in real terms.

Tone had his faults but one of them wasn’t lack of investment in education via actually building schools (!) and the National Strategies programme. So much was done 1997-2011 for education it makes you weep how it has all been trashed and gutted by our Tory “friends”.

  5. So that’s 4 HLTA salaries the school will have to find.

Not withstanding the separate issue that TAs are widely underpaid anyway, these kind of additional costs are only going to make things worse for the students.

  6. I’d hate to see the energy bill at the school I work at. Two out of the five ‘blocks’ have had their boilers break just before Christmas but the company the school uses for boiler maintenance can’t get the parta due to Brexit (apparently it’s a HUGE fix, almost complete replacement). So in both blocks (10+ classrooms each) we now have two electric heaters on 10 hours per day.

  7. Not surprised in the slightest. Most schools are running in ancient heating systems and piss-poor insulation

  8. So… Which Minister will propose a “solution” of scrapping the long summer holiday in favour of a long winter holiday?

  9. Sure doesn’t help that half the schools in this country seem to have walls that insulate as much as a tin can. There seems to have been a glut of these pre-fab schools in the 80s and 90s that we are left with.

  10. Doesn’t really help in the winter having the radiators on to keep people warm then opening the windows to stop COVID spread in classrooms, pissing said heat out the windows.
