Ukraine’s Zelenskyy and Philippines’ Marcos hold first in-person meeting in Manila

and Trina has rejected Ukraine’s accusations that it’s trying to prevent countries attending an upcoming peace Summit that aims to end the war with Russia Ukraine’s president claimed Beijing is disrupting the event in remarks made during the Shang dialogue in Singapore which China today roundly rebuffed uh president zalinski visited the Philippines following his surprise visit to Singapore continuing his efforts to encourage Asian Nations to attend his peace Summit he met with counterpart Ferdinand Marcos Jr who said the Philippines will be represented at this event both sides AG to strengthen bilateral relations with Kiev opening its Embassy in Manila this year Mr Marcos pledged Philippine assistance to help Ukraine end its war against Russia in any way possible uh we are very uh honored that you found the time to pass by with the Phil pass by the Philippines I know that uh the crisis in your country has uh occupied all of your attention and all of your time and uh it is a it is a great pleasure to to meet with you uh to discuss some of the issues that are common to our two countries and uh hopefully find ways forward uh for both of us together Mr President I’m happy to hear today from you that you participate our PE steps steps to the peace that’s real think what really want our people just to bring peace to our homes to yes and thank you for participation of Peace Summit that’s very strong signal China meantime has plans for its own peace Summit that could include Russia’s participation cna’s Livia Shong explains what role Beijing sees itself playing in this conflict today the foreign Ministry is saying that China has been communication with Ukraine since the conflict began and that cooperation has also continued saying that it’s s in Ukraine continue to be open um we also know that the U us and EU have been trying to get China to use more of its influence with Moscow to try and end this conflict and it also has these allegations that China is supplying uh weapons or dual use items to Russia but this is something that uh China has continued to deny today the foreign Ministry instead um not only just pointing the finger back at the US for Fanning the Flames of tension but also also now saying that it is uh the US and the West that’s supplying weapons and weapon parts and dual use items to Russia and so we’ll have to see how the West responds to that but we know that China is also looking at organizing its own peace conference uh with Brazil there are no further details on that but I guess uh the question then is what role does China see itself playing um in helping to mediate this ongoing Ukraine war and I spoke with China’s former ambassador to the US and asked him about this have listen do you feel from your perspective then that China is better placed to play a role in helping to mediate in this conflict uh you outline what China is prepared to do um but Europe and the US have repeatedly asked China to use more of its influence uh with Russia I think as far if we’re talking about good will maybe China is a better place than some of the other powers if we talk about capability I’m not so sure we are better placed there are country who are more capable than China to help a peaceful solution what is lacking is political will could we clarify which countries specifically you think are better place to do more well frankly I think what I when I say this what I had in mind was United States and NATO members it seemed to me I have not I have not talked to these people in person but as far as I can read from press reports seem to me some people are more interested in continuing the conflict and socalled keep Russia down so they are still sending more and more arms to the region how can you stop the conflicts with more and more armed Supply that’s impossible

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Philippines, following his surprise visit to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. He met his counterpart Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who said the Philippines will be represented at Ukraine’s peace summit later this month. Both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral relations, with Kyiv opening its embassy in Manila this year. Mr Marcos also pledged Philippine assistance to help Ukraine end its war against Russia “in any way possible”.
