Stalled EU Membership for Western Balkans Prompts Fears of Democratic Backsliding

  1. As much as I would love the EU to keep growing, we are going to experience democratic backsliding ourselves if we keep admitting countries that are so underdeveloped. The shitstorm caused by Poland and Hungary is still unresolved. Italy and Greece are constantly flirting with the far-right, with France being not far behind considering how unpopular Macron is.

On the whole, Eastern Europe is doing horribly as there is such a huge lack of trust among the people in their own political systems that they fear being vaccinated. Even the Germans are split because there are so many of them who do not want to get vaccinated. Unfortunately, the difference in mentality between the developed and not so developed nations is still immense. This has a direct impact on the overall desire to move with the times instead of being stuck in the past when it comes to technology, science, and social matters.

The ongoing pandemic has truly revealed all the issues we must address within the EU before moving forward and accepting even poorer countries.

  2. I think the example of Hungary and Poland shows clearly that EU needs to consider quality over quantity. About the last thing we need is even bigger internal coalition of wannabe autocracies.
