I’ll be interested to hear from him or a cabinet minister just why this isn’t as bad as it seems, actually.
He’s just not very good at politics. I genuinely have no idea why he went into it, as he doesn’t believe in anything, has taken a huge pay cut to do it and is getting nothing out of it
Catterick, a big army base, is in his constituency. He is trying to lose his seat, so he doesn’t have to keep his promise to stay in the UK after the election.
This is going to piss off every side of the political spectrum which is really a quite impressive achievement.
If anything is going to lose Tories the 65+ vote, it’s this.
If there’s one thing that almost everyone in this country can agree on, it’s that it’s appropriate to pay respect to the guys who fought in the Second World War. Realistically, this was the last opportunity to do that while a decent number of them are still alive and well enough to take part.
Skiving off early to do an interview with ITV must be one the most stupid and tone deaf things he could have done.
He’s completely gormless.
This is quite a big misstep for Mr. Sunak. The war and the respect due to those who fought in it, are quite a big part of our national psyche. So a gaffe like this is going to play poorly with his own base – and really, almost everyone else, too.
At this point it’s either deliberate sabotage by his advisors or himself so he can sail off into the California sunset.
This may not have looked as bad if David Cameron wasn’t the one in the photos. Bad either way, but you don’t want someone who used to do your job showing how it should be done.
It’s deliberate. It has to be at this point. I’m nowhere near his audience, I hate the idea of national service, I’m a bleeding heart liberal and I am uncomfortable with people saying things like “thanks for your service”. But I of course hugely respect the people who served, and this was the last chance for them to be recognised at a major event (80 years since D day). They are literally dying off, and their prime minister ignored them. Also, it shows a) his arrogance generally b) he can’t even be arsed to play up to the persona he’s invented for his target market c) he’s a rat faced briefcase wanker
