(Cyclists have to give way at zebra crossings. -British english.)
I thought this was really interesting because I’ve always yielded to cyclists at crosswalks previously but it seems like cars have the right of way.
This doesn’t apply if the crossing has a “Give way to cycles” sign. Or if you’re turning.

Noy only ”give way to cyclists sign” but also a STOP or yield sign.
Also doesn’t apply when the car changes direction at a junction.
I usually also let them pass because making them dismount to walk is worse for everyone. Unless they appear too quickly. And I think that’s why the rule is as it is. There’s more time for a car to see and react to a pedestrian than a cyclist.
I still do give way sometimes even though I should have the right, better to be safe than sorry and have a cycle slam into the side of the car. I would’ve been right to just keep driving but then I’d need to deal with all the hassle of a cyclist getting hurt and the car getting scratches
So get off your bike and walk across. Then you are a pedestrian. Get back on when you’re across.
I was taught that if the zebra crossing does not indicate continued cycling lane (as on the left picture) you are actually supposed to walk your bike over it. Don’t know if this has changed though.
Technically this is correct, they should not be given way when crossing the road using a pedestrian crossing without getting off the bike, but knowing cyclists, I rather give them way
In practice it’s more common that cars have to yield, either when they’re turning, or due to a give way sign. But it’s true, when there’s a zebra crossing on the road like that, cyclists have to give way.
As someone who commutes often by bike, the level of understanding the traffic code by motorists is quite low(propably applies to 80% of other road users as well)
Basically I have to be extra careful in places I have the right of way and in places I’m supposed to yield the cars stop to give me the way.
Fakenews. .remember cyclist has right of the way always and the are always correct, especially if they wear spandex /s
Way easier to hop off bike, then cars will have to give way because I’m pedestrian.
Most cyclists make it impossible for cars to follow the rule when there is no triangle, as they refuse to yield and just kamikaze on their bikes onto the crosswalk. Either it’s ignorance or arrogance. So due to this, most cars instead of honking and causing an issue, just prefer to yield. And this of course perpetuates the problem as cyclists prefer it this way.
A lot of education is still needed with these issues in Finland.
You did not learn this in driving school?
don’t try this in the real world, always give way to cyclist
ton of cyclist don’t know this and will enter and cause an accident so better safe than sorry
Its just for pedestrian’s , not for cyclist. There no sign that shows cyclists 🤔
It makes me uncomfortable when I’ve stopped on my bike and waiting for cars to pass and then they stop to let me pass despite them having the right of way.
If a car on the lane on my side of the road stops and waits for me to cross, I won’t know if an incoming car on the other lane will stop too. Then I feel emotionally pressured to cross anyway and feel generally uncomfortable.
Drivers don’t trust cyclists to know that they don’t have the right of way, so cars slow down when they see a cyclist near a crosswalk. Cyclists, seeing cars slow down near a crosswalk, think that cars are giving them way. The cyclist then crosses because they do not want to keep the traffic waiting, nor do they want to start abstract hand waving to signal the driver to go. The end result is that cyclists think drivers are always giving them way, and drivers think cyclists don’t know the rules.
I slow down my cycling to a crawl — the kind where you’re just balancing on top of the bike — a solid 4 meters from the crosswalk, and cars still stop to give me way cuz they don’t trust me to know the rules.
I hate cars waiting on me when I’ve clearly stopped before crossing already. It doesn’t even save anyone’s time; by the time I can be assured I can cross, they could have passed already.
(Of course, if there are multiple cars coming in a row, I’ll be grateful if the first one stops, but I’m talking about when there’s just one.)
The worst similar case was when I had no need to stop, the car could have just gone on and I could have gone on riding and it would have been gone by the time I got there, but it kept slowing down… until it stopped altogether and blocked my path. Maybe, just *maybe*, it wouldn’t have hit me in that situation if had just kept going.
I think it has to do with cyclists being quicker than a pedestrian even when jogging. So the cyclist has to yield
I am not entirely sure how as a cyclist I am supposed to know where I can cycle and when I have to become a pedestrian. The cycle path sights are not consistently displayed at all crossing for both cars and zebra crossings.
For this reason I prefer to cycle on the (car) road rather than mixed walk/cycle paths
