I can either buy two single tickets and spend up to £60 something, or I can spend £23 and get as many buses and tubes as I like and still go to Gatwick and back. That seems…odd?
Single tickets each way are usually more expensive.
A return ticket makes it cheaper, for instance the cheapest Off-peak Day Return (any off-peak ThamesLink service) is £15.30, but no further TfL travel included.
TfL extending the Oyster/ticketless charging area to Gatwick back in 2016 has made pricing far more complicated, but also cheaper if you know which ticket to get.
