Surely it would make more sense to only allow relatively healthy takeaways to open, rather than a blanket ban in some areas?
You wanted to tackle obesity and this is what you came up with. Really
Have they been bribed by the existing takeaways to reduce competition?
I’m in two minds about this one. First of all, I wonder if any work has been done on the impact of the concentration of takeaways in an area on obesity that would suggest this was an effective strategy. Secondly, I wonder if it’s the council’s job to make such decisions, decisions that might affect someone’s livelihood (if they wanted to open such an establishment, that is) and also affect people’s choices.
And then there’s the arguments that will centre on the ‘Nanny State’. Or Nanny Council in this case.
Newcastle the only city I’ve been where the women are rougher than the men
How to not become obese:
Eat approx 2000 calories a day. Fewer if you are short, more if you are tall, more if you work out.
You are welcome. Source: you already know it, look at which of your mates eat takeaway, hint it’s almost all of them, not all of them are obese or even mildly rotund.
What an odd idea. Looks like they realised that a lot of people in Newcastle are obese and just want to point the finger at something completely irrelevant. You could eat a takeaway every day and lose weight (although your health would plummet), so how exactly would this combat obesity?

Where will people launder money? Expect more barbers if this does actually happen.
This is hardly the fault of takeaway owners. There’s plenty of shite, processed food to be had at any supermarket or corner shop.
I think society in general is far too softly softly about obesity. Individuals need to take some accountability. It costs the NHS a fuckton of money. If you’re an adult, obese and have no health conditions that cause weight gain, you need to eat less and move more. Simple as. Otherwise you’re just increasing the chances of health complications and you’re shaving years off your life.
How about make fresh food cheaper and affordable so people can eat healthy? Fuck safe not rocket science.
If people want to eat crap, they’ll find ways. I know because I eat crap a lot. This is just the laziest way to appeal to healthy eating instead of looking at the issues.
Time
Energy
Cost
I will admit, I used to cook a lot but nowadays, I simply can’t be arsed and am ashamed of it. I know it’s easy to eat healthy but sometimes, a good ol’ pizza from iceland does the job as a fuck all meal.

Ah so we have a comprehensive plan of dietary education, healthy food drives, food prep etc. heathy option takeaways?
Nope just ban new takeaways
Shall we close roads to stop car crashes whilst we are at it?
This is so far from the answer.
Why not change the fact that it costs more to buy a salad than a frozen pizza, 5 jam doughnuts AND a can of coke?
How about improving peoples lives there? Giving people opportunities, mental health support and improving well being is the way to get people to care more about themselves and make better choices. People know takeaways are bad and lots of unhealthy food does not make you feel good, these are people trapped in a rut. Not the solution at all.
Good old Let’s blame the food and not the people 👍
Takeaways aren’t making people fat but them choosing to constantly over eat and lots of really fatty greasy takeaways and probably a lack of exercise or movement are….
I hate the whole blame everything else and make normal people with self control suffer because those who have none.
Fixing poverty would be more effective, cheap food is high in calories and low in nutrients.
Guessing McDonald’s and KFC won’t be looted though as they’re “restaurants”
File this under *stories about things that haven’t happened, aren’t happening and won’t happen*.
Articles about ‘plans to…’ are just lazy nonsense designed to whip up anger. More often than not a more accurate report would say ‘a suggestion was made’.
Move on.
So we’re punishing new businesses because some individuals have no self control. I guess we know were we stand.

Obesity is a coping mechanism for a toxic environment, or better said, a toxic government.
Fatties are gonna fat, nothing can change this apart from maybe Ozempic.
Maybe educating people on nutrition properly and treating obesity like a disease would work? The NHS and GPs are obviously very overstretched at the moment, so it couldn’t be immediate. But weight loss drugs are becoming more and more common now.
Wish people could take responsibility for their own actions instead of government/councils having to attempt to fix it through stupid policy changes.
*Existing takeaway owners start rubbing their greasy hands as the threat of new competition leaves the market
While a little ridiculous it makes a bit of sense as almost every new “shop” that opens is for fast food. I mean just for Oxford the 3 of the most recent shops have been Popeye’s, Wendy’s, and Shakeshack.
Why do something constructive when you could just ban shit /s
Glasgow, please implement this. Pretty f#cking please…🙏
“It was this law that brought about the black market battered sausage ring…. And the eventual rise of the clandestine organised crime gangs of kebab runners… speeding across the Pennines chased by the COD Squad of police drones, sniffing out curry sauce as it’s sped from coast to coast”
Surely that will just up the price and demand on existing takeaways?
Collective punishment is against the geneva convention.
Just saying.
Bring in a fat tax. Aka. You’re fat. You pay a few % more on your income to compensate for the burden you’ll be on society.
Just make supermarket & takeaway door openings narrow while banning deliveries. Unless they hold a blue badge then big doors open briefly.
Look, as an obese person this is going to make no difference whatsoever. government you need to put your money into mental health funding and food education, none of this bullshit will work
Great. Now you’re regulating what legal businesses we can open as well as our diet. Please get out of our lives Government. Focus on why people are so depressed or busy they feel they can’t cook.
People get takeaways now because both partners are working.
Eventually there comes a day where you are both shattered and cba to cook
Id suggest –
Guve people a living wage to reduce overtime
Stop centralising everything – making jobs 1hr communte away – allow hybrid work as standard.
Give you time and money you can actually go for a walk and to the gym.
Maybe stop making office jobs people sit on their arse all day and make corportations have raising standing desks. And assign screen breaks every 1.30
All of the above would improve mental health.
Better mental health = more energy = better food choices.
But people are already overweight with the current ones…
Maybe ideas like shutting gyms in the lockdowns did more damage ?
The real answer is to educate people and make fresh food more available and affordable. That’s not, and will most likely never be possible until we massively reform how we view food production.
We push ultra high processed foods (uhpf’s) because they are cheap, have good shelf lives and are profitable. Uhpf’s are a massive cause of obesity in the developed world.
The UK way, just ban everything without resolving the problem
A takeaway local to me on the coast of Newcastle just started doing a vodka penne deep dish pizza, so I think we have the obesity covered.
(I wanna try it)
I do think there are too many fast food places. On one street there are at least 5 kebab shops about 1000meter of each other.
