  1. F-5s would be perfect for a secondary role like this. They are simple, easy to maintain and there are examples of upgraded F-5s.

  2. Great choice. Perhaps something like a Fi-156 Stork clone would work even better as a stable gun platform

  3. Militarized Air Tractors such as the AT-802U might be effective for this role and other low-level missions.

  4. A lot of this comes down to cost. Sure scramble jet to shoot down a drone. If the drone costs $5000 but your flight hour is $10000 that’s a good trade for the drone. But that yak probably doesn’t cost a lot and the guy in the back with a rifle is cheaper than cannon shells.

  5. There’s a lot of things I expect an aircraft to be able to do but opening the window and doing a drive by was not one of them.
