we must examine why fast food restaurants in other countries can run with lower overhead.
These do not equate: hourly wage of AU$16 vs US$16.
NOTE: “As of the latest available exchange rate, **AU$15.89** converts to approximately **US$10.48**. [This is based on the exchange rate of **1 AUD = 0.66 USD**](https://bing.com/search?q=convert+AU%2415.89+to+US%24)[^(1)](https://bing.com/search?q=convert+AU%2415.89+to+US%24). Please note that exchange rates fluctuate, so the exact amount can vary if the rate changes.”
ALSO NOTE: “The minimum wage in California for all employers starting January 1, 2024, is **$16 per hour**. Fast food restaurant employers are required to provide a minimum wage of $20 per hour on April 1, while the wage for healthcare facilities also increased on June 1 (it can be paid from between $18 to $23 per hour).”

The numbers OP has provided are in USD.
The minimum wage in Australia is AUD$23.23 (USD$15.31 at today’s exchange rate).
A Big Mac is AUD$7.90 (USD$5.21 at today’s exchange rate).
Also, if you work more than 10 hours per week your employer is required by law to contribute 10.5% on top of your salary to your retirement fund.
