D-Day veterans’ emotional journey
I’m traveling on the ferry from Portsmouth to Normandy what is an incredibly special journey to Mark D-Day there may only be over 30 veterans on this trip compared to over 200 back in 2019 but the journey really has all been about celebrating them and their service it has been a remarkable privilege really to hear their stories to listen to the horrors that they saw that day but also the fact that they don’t like to be ref to as Heroes for them this next few days is going to be all about remembering their friends and those who never made it back and over the coming days they’ll be joined by members of the royal family and dignitaries from all over the world for some huge commemorative events which I’m told we’re unlikely to see again because of the remarkable old age of those who at the moment are still able to share their stories [Music]
A group of 31 British veterans have landed in France almost 80 years since they invaded the German-occupied coastline on 6 June 1944.
Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history and changed the course of the war.
