  1. >WASHINGTON — Biden administration officials have discussed potentially negotiating a unilateral deal with Hamas to secure the release of five Americans being held hostage in Gaza if current cease-fire talks involving Israel fail, according to two current senior U.S. officials and two former senior U.S. officials.
Such negotiations would not include Israel and would be conducted through Qatari interlocutors, as current talks have been, said the officials, all of whom have been briefed on the discussions.
White House officials declined to comment.

The officials did not know what the U.S. might give Hamas in exchange for the release of American hostages. But, the officials said, Hamas could have an incentive to cut a unilateral deal with the U.S. because doing so would likely further strain relations between the U.S. and Israel and put additional domestic political pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

  2. After the Griner and Merchant of death deal, I don’t think Biden and his administration should even be allowed to negotiate what’s for dinner.

  3. This is so confusing. It was reported that Israel had accepted the latest potential deal and that we were waiting for Hamas to respond. Now the US would make a deal with Hamas directly, bypassing Israel? It feels like we skipped a few steps.

As an Israeli I would be elated if this somehow helped bring down our current govt but I’m not happy about the precedent it would set.

  4. It blows my mind that Hamas murdered 32 and then kidnapped 10 American citizens, yet the US is not giving Gaza the same dose of “freedom” that other countries in the region have received.

I’m surprised they haven’t sent in some special forces or something to get their citizens back.

And how would this not violate their policy of not negotiating with terrorists. They designate Hamas as a terrorist group. So why negotiate with them to get their kidnapped citizens back?

  5. >”Hamas murdered more than 30 Americans and kidnapped more” during the attack, Garland said. “We are investigating those heinous crimes and we will hold those people accountable.” [Merrick Garland](https://apnews.com/article/hamas-americans-killed-kidnapped-justice-department-investigation-64d851f794a6de4cbda40968dca50320#)

I’m confused what would the negotiations entail? Is this basically giving the kidnappers a ransom for the hostages. We’ve no Hamas prisoners that I’m aware of, so no trade, it’s basically a cash for Hostage deal. So holding them accountable was just words.

  6. All for show. Biden wants to make it look like he’s doing something before the election.

  7. In exchange for what?

What is the US willing to give to the terrorists in order to get hostages freed?

  8. The only deal that should be available is that they give us the American Citizens back or we send a seal team into Qatar. That should have been communicated day 1. Day 2 should have included the seal team.

  9. Hersh’s mother has fought so hard in front of insurmountable odds, horrendous ridicule and death threats from the ever so tolerant left. I can’t imagine what that poor kid had to go through while also recovering in captivity from losing his arm….

This will probably be the worst deal for Israel yet, but it’s already 8 months in this war.

  10. How does one negotiate unilaterally?  Pretty sure they mean bilaterally.

‘Hi – we’ll be taking the hostages thank you’ is all I can come up with.

  11. I would have assumed this about literally any and all potential actions

  12. “But, the officials said, Hamas could have an incentive to cut a unilateral deal with the U.S. because doing so would likely further strain relations between the U.S. and Israel and put additional domestic political pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

This would be like federal government offer a deal to MS13 or the Crips to score some points against a mayor both of them don’t like. Another diplomatic move all US allies will be sure to appreciate!!!

  13. Why not send seal team in instead of negotiating with terrorist?

  14. what about the doctrine of not negotiating with terrorists?

  15. Putin got a hostage out..I hope Biden will do all he can..

  16. The deal should have been return the hostages tomorrow or else we make what Israel is doing look like nothing compared to what is coming. I can’t believe that the US not only is hampering Israel from recovering their hostages but isn’t even trying to recover American citizens who were taken hostage. It’s clear that Israel cares more for Israelis than the US does for Americans.

  17. I feel awful for the hostages and their families but as painful as it might be, we should not be negotiating with Hamas at all.

  18. They know the senior Hamas guys in Qatar. Kidnap them, and their families. if Qatar complains tell them you know nothing about it.

Then grab the $5+ billion those guys have stashed in accounts across the world

    That’s what Russia would do.

  19. Well, good luck with that. Others have tried but Hamas has been extremely difficult about releasing any more hostages, dead or alive.

  20. Rachel Goldberg has said she hasn’t heard anything concrete from the Biden administration about this report. She said, “is this a case of ‘Let’s make some news?”.

The American hostage families are meeting with Blinken tomorrow and Goldberg is going to ask about this report.

  21. I feel like “negotiating a unilateral deal” is an oxymoron.
