Ukraine says deep drone strike destroys rare Russian Su-57 stealth fighter

U.S. officials are racing against the clock tonight to finalize a deal for a $50 billion loan package for Ukraine, using profits from frozen Russian assets. Sources say it is a top priority before President Joe Biden’s meeting with G7 leaders in Italy next week. Meanwhile, Ukraine says it’s dealt a major blow to Russia when its drones damaged one of Russia’s most powerful warplanes seen here parked at a Russian military base before the attack. The su 57 is a supersonic stealth fighter that can evade radar, and Russia only has a limited number of the multimillion dollar jets. Joining us now, CNN contributor, contributor and former CNN Moscow bureau chief Jill Dougherty. Jill, thanks so much for being here. Let’s start first with this claim, this claim from Ukraine, that they hit this jet inside Russia. If true, how significant is it? Well, I think it’s quite significant. Number one, this really is cutting edge, as you pointed out. it’s it’s new. It’s the best that the Russians have. And if it’s at least damaged, that is significant. And then the fact that they damaged in Russia, this is located this spot at the base where they apparently hit it, the Ukrainians hit it, is inside Russia by about, 600km, which would be roughly like 350 miles. And that’s significant, too. And I think this is really a trend that the Russians worried about. The Ukrainians are attacking more and more inside Russia and taking the battle to them. And that is very concerning. And does this have anything to do potentially with the, the go ahead that that President Biden gave them to use U.S. munitions? I don’t know, in short range, to, to go into Russia. Is that connected at all? You know, it’s part of the, I would say debate about how far you can go because there are some, of the European allies who think that you should be able to go in Ukraine, should be able to hit Russia. The United States has been much more careful. And so, President Biden has been saying you can use weapons, but pretty much only because of this area. The city of how to Kiev, that is, has been attacked by the Russians a lot kind of on the border. And you have to be more moderate in how far you go in. It really is a big debate and but but you can definitely say that the trend is to allow the Ukrainians to go further, farther and farther into Russia. And for Putin, that is a real problem because he’s tried to, you know, depicted as war that doesn’t really affect the homeland. It’s really in Ukraine. And that’s not the case. And Ukraine has stabilized its northern front thanks to more Western weapons. And as we were just talking about this, permission to use them to target positions within Russia, but they’re still being stretched pretty thin along the front line. So I’m curious, do you think this new, this potential, new funding, this potential $50 billion in loans could could help them? There? I think it can help. There’s no question. especially you know, you have President Biden talking about another $255 million for ammunition. And that’s really what they need. And that would include other things, besides ammunition. It would be air defense, munitions, etc.. That’s very, very important as to, you know, winning the war, turning the tide. It doesn’t appear that we’re at that stage at all. It’s really incremental. But but I think we’re at a moment where Russia is really fully comprehending that the Ukrainians are intent to take it to them. And that’s that’s another step in this war. And I think that’s where you, you have some of the lot of nuclear is threatening by Putin, etc.. So I think we’re kind of in a different stage. Yeah, it does seem it does feel weighty and significant in that way. I do want to get your take two on that, that $50 billion in aid that I just mentioned, that U.S. officials are looking to make a deal with these other G7 leaders to send that to Ukraine, but they want to use profits from these frozen Russian assets. What do you think about that? Well, this is another big debate because, the United States, in fact, President Biden is pushing very strongly right now before the meeting of the G7 that’s coming up, I think, June 13th. He is pushing, to be able to it’s a little complicated, but to be able to use the interest from those assets that are held, in financial institutions in the West, primarily in Europe, use them to pay to help the Ukrainians out. Now, how you do that is a little more complex. It appears what they’re going to say is give them a loan or give them maybe loans, and then they’re paid back to the United States and to Europe with money that Russia has. It’s controversial, but that is what Biden and others really want to do, and that’s what he’s pushing for right now. We’ll see if he can get it done. All right, Joe, thanks so much. Good to see you.

  1. I was required to read The Diary of Anne Frank in middle school but I didn’t hear the word Nakba once or learn any history of the Middle East until after Oct 7th. Fool me once, SHAME ON YOU! “NEVER AGAIN”, this time it’s personal.

  3. I really kind of hate that the US is putting restrictions on Ukraine. I understand the mentality of it, but come on, Russia invaded a neighbor and started a war. Now we're saying "Well, you can hit them back, but not too hard…"

It's warfare. The Russians began it, an if they don't want Ukrainians coming across their border, they should have just stayed home.

  4. Lets recall all the Russian Zombie circus when Ukraine claimed to hit their flagship "Moscow":

"No, Ukraine doesn't have such capability"

"No, Ukrainian attack was successfully repelled: no damage"

"No, There is only a little smoke"

"No, Moscow is going to port for a paint job"

"No, Moscow is being towed to port due to a mechanical issue"

"Ok, Moscow sunk due to big waves, 1 sailor died"

LOL – that's all you need to know about Russian Reich…

  5. It's good propaganda but tactically this is of little importance because Russia isn't really using these Su-57's against Ukraine, there have been a few sparse reports claiming their usage but otherwise these are mostly benched because they don't want to risk wasting them on missions that can be handled by other platforms

  6. Did the US not just approve an aid package for Ukraine of like $60 billion a couple months ago now Joe Biden‘s gonna give them $50 billion more… on top of the 386 billion… people are you seriously not seeing these numbers? What is it gonna take to rebuild Ukraine who is really paying for this?

  8. The neonazis in the democratic party here in the US think a country like Russia will let the US army hiding on the ground in Ukraine to fire at Russia expecting Russia that possess this huge nuclear capability and the only country that has functional hypersonic missiles which the US itself has no defense whatsoever against them will not obliterate some infrastructure inside US. Frankly Americans should not trust the democratic party for their safety and their future because these people are more fundamentalist extremist than rational, their actions are rather driven by hate, megalomania than rational thinking.

  9. Fantastic news! Ukraine’s stealthy surprise gave Russia’s prized fighter jet a drone strike makeover, and all the way 365 miles behind the frontline, no less. That’s the ultimate game of hide and seek, but with more fireworks, baby! I can just picture the jet’s “What the…?” moment as it got an unexpected visitor. Keep your devilish peepers on the sky, Putin! Your vision of the “frontlines” is just a suggestion on shaky ground for your unprovoked war. Drones are crashing your party…go on and cry about it!

  10. Yeah.

    Suppose it’s true.

    What next?

Volo cannot and will not prevail, no matter what is sent to Ukraine.

Russia has held back, and fully understands the American political situation too.

It knows Trump is on the way, and will force a solution on Ukraine, like it or not.

Russia wants a larger buffer between itself and the antagonizing west, and Ukraine is that buffer.

How large it becomes…depends on Volo.

    Keep up the jabs Ukies.

    Watch what happens…

  11. Why is fighting back on Russian soil very concerning? If another country attacks the US do you think we would just say, "Oh let's just keep it on our soul?", which Biden is more likely to say than any other presidents, or would we take the fight to them and defend our way of living? Historically we fight back and win because we don't just sit back and wait for the next attack. We take action. It's hypocritical to expect any other country to just sit back and wait.

  12. This is like weapoms of mass Distruction. And President Geroge Bush's speach on top of the pile of rubbish of the New York twin Towers.. You are with us or against us. Real hollywood style.we know now it was all lies.

  13. It doesn't count, the plane was grounded anyways. Propaganda war machines. Ukraine knows it is not wining the war. Let's be honest. Let peace reign. Russia and Ukraine are sibling misled by others.

  14. This had nothing to do with allowing Ukraine to strike inside Russia. Not a single weapon anyone has provided could have covered even half this distance. This was a ukrainian drone. Ukrainian made. They have every right to do whatever the hell they want to Russia with their weapons.

  15. How can you believe to the Ukraine regimen, just propaganda to ask for more help, Ukraine and all media's are liars ,we support Russia 🇷🇺 from latinoamerica
