South Africa: ANC calls demands for Ramaphosa to step down for coalition talks a ‘no-go’

South Africa’s president sirel rapos is under growing pressure after leading his ruling party to its worst election result in 30 years with more than 99% of votes counted the African National Congress has about 40% that means thec will be forced to share power for the first time since leading the country out of AP partide in 1994 this Sunday The party said it would begin holding discussions with other groups over the next few days we can speak to our correspondent an vinel to find out more let you an so the nnc just wrapping up a press conference earlier this Sunday uh what came out of that so yes ANC Secretary General Filan balula um speaking quite strongly about uh wanting no Rebel rousing quote no Rebel rousing responding to people being nervous uh generally and I’ve gotten that sense myself speaking to friends and family especially after former president Jacob Zuma’s comments at his media briefing last night with the MK party where he basically said well there will be trouble if the IEC declares uh the vote today because he feels that time should be taken to deal with every uh objection and obviously they’re in the camp of objections uh thec sorry the IEC itself later this was a very late night you could imagine um later after that basically said that look we had over 570 objections and we’re dealing we’re doing our best to deal with all of them but we will announce uh tomorrow being today so for right now we’re on track for an announcement we have thec saying look and I’m quoting fil Bala saying we got a beating taking stock of the fact that um they’ve dropped lower than they’ve ever dropped before just by percentage and also of course they’ve never been this low so and saying that we need to learn lessons but we still have six million people voting for us and they deserve our trust um so he says and I’ve made a little note here but he also said ramapa is the president of thec uh quote if you come to us and say he must step down um forget it that’s exactly what he said forget it and this is of course a reference to um comments from the MK earlier that they would not uh negotiate with the ANC of roposa so there’s been a lot of speculation on what is going to happen from mosa at one stage round about Friday there was even a rumor that Raposa might step down um but all rumor it’s conjecture it is people thinking and talking uh but people are nervous of course with Zuma’s history that there might be uh disruptions um but so far on the ground it’s not that likely yeah and just before you came on air South Africa’s largest Trade union saying what’s key is that the Coalition be led by thec and by RMA post man if we look to the opposition the groups that could play a role sort of like a king maker what are the possibilities there who do you think we might see step up so look I mean we’ve got the da which is number two you know um with just over 20% so and they they make no bones about the fact that they want Power they are as hungry to get it as the ANC is to keep it um so there are talks of course now also uh strongly of a government of national unity and for himself just said this at the media briefing because he was saying that you know we want stability we want the country to be stable we want to go ahead peacefully and we also want to fix what we did wrong as thec um he said in fact that we received a mandate uh from the a ANC NEC sorry long light ANC NEC um to say we must engage with whoever is prepared to engage with us um of course there was the Visa that he gave which is don’t ask us to you know remove our president because that’s not negotiable but basically saying anybody who wants to engage with us we have a mandate to engage with you and that um talks about talks are happening again I’m quoting him directly all right and thank you very much and ventel Reporting from Cape down thank you

  1. DA is the only party who can bring stable economics and trust in south Africa. The rest are involved with corruption and incompetence to govern a country.

  2. I do think le grand coalition is the best for the time being. DA and ANC. Give some of the portfolios to DA to clean up some ministries and let the country continue in peace.

  3. Ramaphosa was funded to destry the ANC and he has been successful..no wonder the racist DA likes him
