  1. Unlike in France or Germany, the far-right surge that the media has been reporting on definitely did not materialize in Denmark, Finland, or Sweden. Meanwhile, leftist and green parties made surprising gains in those countries.

In Denmark, the Green Left Party became the largest party with 17.4% of the vote and the center-left Social Democrats came in second with 15.6%, while the far-right Denmark Democrats only got 7.4% and a single seat.

In Sweden, the far-right Swedish Democrats lost ground for the first time in an election in the party’s history, and they were surprisingly defeated by the Greens. In addition, the Left Party saw a vote share increase of 4.2%.

In Finland, the socialist Left Alliance unexpectedly saw an increase of 10.4% compared to the previous European election, coming in second with 17.3% of the vote. Meanwhile, the far-right Finns Party saw its support fall drastically to win only 7.6% and a single seat.

  2. You see far right gains in countries being overwhelmed with immigrants.

  3. Seems like the growing trend is that over-immigration results in right-wing parties gaining influence… but when over-immigration is addressed, right-wing parties quickly lose influence.

It seems many people don’t want to support right-wing parties or other right-wing agendas – but do want over-immigration addressed.

  4. To be clear, nordic left wing parties have gained ground … but everywhere else in Europe, it’s the right and far right that have gained seats.

    Title is a bit misleading.

  5. r/europe and fake narratives about migration and politics 3, 2, 1, go!

  6. EU voters have finally enough. Look at the exit polls throughout the EU, the top 3 issues are illegal immigration, crime and the economy, just like in the USA.

Trump could win in a landslide.

  7. Probably because of a pretty big political scandal that came to light like a week or two before the elections, and their handling of it all was… not ideal at first. I think there are a million other factors coming into play as well, such as lower participation in general that would naturally lead to a drop for SD as their core voters are the least likely to be interested in voting in the EU-elections either way. Personally can’t wait until they get kicked out of parliament, though I fear they’re here to stay forever now

  8. Much of the left wing in Scandinavia are already anti mass immigration, alongside being pro intergration. Which largely accounts for this.

Ironically the left wing in Scandinavia would be labelled far right in much of Western Europe, where any opposition to mass immigration or multiculturalism gets you put in such a category.

  9. Why is left always referred to as “left” and anything that is middle of the road/right considered “far right”? Where’s the normal right???

  10. Well this is good news. This morning when my power went out the news seemed to be saying that the haters where gaining ground.

  11. Europe shouldn’t have to take in so many refugees. But countries like the US and Australia absolutely should. Imagine being founded as an immigrant state, having no native culture because you killed everyone who did, and then deciding you’re done taking immigrants.

  12. >far-right declines in EU vote

Why does this go against everything CBC News just told me on the radio in the car?

  13. Left wing Nordic party’s are more restrictive on immigration. I assume that’s what the far-right shift is about
