Lockdown in Latvia planned from October 21 until November 15 due to COVID-19

  1. Here we go again. First EU country to announce a lockdown. One of those with only half of the population vaccinated, but I also live in one of those – Poland, so this is getting me nervous. That being said, checked numbers of cases (fro two days ago, so Friday numbers, not weekend ones) on WorldMeters and 2797? That’s like 53k in Poland… how did Latvia get such insane numbers? What kind of restrictions did you guys have?

  2. Mid December is going to be the true test, where current forecast shows the Virus will start to build momentum on spread. Mutations have been tame so far but you never know what could happen.

  3. In my opinion lockdowns should be completely ruled out at the point when everyone can get a vaccine. Locking everyone down won’t make society more immune. Restaurants, cinemas, gyms, etc. that are already available only for green pass holders in Latvia will be closed, but factories that probably have a lot of unvaccinated workers will continue to operate.

What’s the plan if cases go up again after lockdown? What’s the plan if lockdown doesn’t result in less cases? I hope that other countries won’t follow the suit and will focus on vaccinations instead of punishing people who did their part. Latvia with 50% people vaccinated will be more restrictive than Romania with 30%, where vaccinated have almost full freedom. Romania’s reproduction rate is already dropping a bit. I know situation with hospitals is bad, but government should give more time for green pass rules instead of pushing lockdowns.

Latvian lockdown may result in the same thing as last years’ autumn lockdown in UK. Government promised just one month of shutdown, which resulted in slight drop in cases. They opened up for few weeks and cases went up again with another lockdown as a result.
