Housing: What will the next government do to help?

  1. Not a lot. Originally the housing boom all happened under a labour government and all we got was smarmy platitudes like the current lot.
Its also worth noting that tony blair was warned about dirty Russian money falsely inflating the London market and ignored this.
This scummy government needs to go, but Kier Starmer does not fill me with any kind of hope.

  2. >And the grubby truth is that when the cost of housing increases, whoever is in power tends to benefit. That is because voters who own houses feel like they are getting richer.

    >So there is little incentive for governments to dampen house price rises by making sure more are built, and a massive incentive to support buyers instead, through things like mortgage subsidies and stamp duty cuts – in effect subsidising demand. That has been the policy pattern that has delivered relentless increases in housing costs.

    >On top of that there is planning. Up and down the land, most Tuesdays and Wednesdays, councillors sitting on planning committees reject local housebuilding projects because that is largely what their voters want.

This pretty much sums up my point of view. Although I’m looking forward to the Tories being kicked out, and I think Labour will do a better job in a lot of areas, no party has the incentive and ability to sort out the housing issue in the UK.

The daft thing is that it’s bad for the economy to maintain the current situation. When property costs, whether renting or buying, are so high, it discourages people from moving to get a job in a new location, making our pool of workers less flexible. There’s also the money being stashed away in saving for a deposit, that’s all money that’s not circulating within the local economy.
