I've been taking up the carpet in my new home and discovered this under one of the carpet, pressed onto the floorboards. I think the house is dated at around the late 1800s

  3. Thats the backing off of some old linoleum flooring.

  4. I think it’s carpet underlay that’s possibly retained the print from the carpet on top. Looks like someone else tried to remove it as well, but left patches where they couldn’t get the adhesive off. You might want to consider the risk of asbestos as any home improvements (such as carpet underlay, artex ceilings and linoleum tiles) between the 1930s and 1970s are likely to be made with asbestos in them.
