Can some explain to an idiot like me what the S-Gene is and why that means it’s a variant of concern?

For those immediately worried about the headline. It says within the article that BA.2 is half of omicron cases in Denmark with no difference in hospitalisations. Denmark also say vaccines are as effective.
SAGE in one week : “We must lockdown now or face 10,000 dead a day”
SAGE in one month, when we don’t lockdown, and the death count was only 7 : “We never said 10,000 would die a day. That was just a projection, not a predication, so obviously we weren’t expecting the real number to be so high”

But… Didn’t we just have Johnson rule that the pandemic was completely over?
