  1. However, the government announced plans to suspend this for one year from April 2022, before restoring it.

**Announcing the move in September, Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey said it would ensure pensioners did not “unfairly” benefit from a “statistical anomaly”.**

  2. As someone who works for one of these companies, very closely with those delivering this price rise. I can tell you, without any uncertainty:

The price rise also affects us. And we haven’t seen a pay rise in over 3 years either, will we see one this year?

We all feel dirty being part of this piece of work. Shame on the CEOs, Shareholders and Directors.

  3. These companies are making mega profit they don’t need to up their contract prices. 9.3% is not RPI. They breaking their contracts.

  4. Best way to do it, if you are out of contract is wait for the increase to happen and then regrade/upgrade/recontract.

  5. Note that for many it may be worth paying slightly more now to remain in a contract that has preferential terms.

I mistakenly upgraded a phone contract a few months ago not realising that my new contract would require me to pay for roaming in the EU (thanks, brexit), a facility I use a lot. Luckily I figured it out, cancelled in my cooling-off period and, although I pay a couple of quid extra a month, I get roaming for free rather than paying £2 a day to use it.

  6. Reminder that MSE encourages people to look for lowest price point on utilities without considering things like service.

I expect a high standard of service and network availability from my ISP which is specifically *why* I make a conscious decision to pay a higher price point to be with BT.

  7. Worth looking into City Fibre if it’s available in your area as an alternative to the BT and Virgin networks. It’s a new network so maybe pricing will be more competitive.

  8. I jumped to a new broadband supplier last night. They usually increase price every April during your contract. But if you sign up between Jan 9th and April, then it doesn’t get increased this coming April. Only a 12 month contract with Shell Energy, but means my costs are fully fixed for another year.

  9. Best thing to do is call around each time your joining deal year is up, see if they’ll beat your best offer. Have negotiated deals they didn’t offer, like just broadband etc.

  10. It’s too late now for another few months, but the absolute best deal you can get is signing up to a 12 month sim only plan on Black Friday and doing another one every year.

I get unlimited data and my average monthly cost for the last few years has been £13

  11. I’ve never had a phone contract and I think that for a lot of people they don’t offer good value. I buy my phones up front and use Giffgaff as my network. The price has stayed steady for about 10 years. Ask yourself if you actually need flagship level specs for the tasks your phone does for you.
