Samsung workers in South Korea stage company’s first-ever strike • FRANCE 24 English

South Korea’s Samsung is one of the biggest Tech firms in the world and this Friday the group was hit by its first ever walk out the Samsung Electronics Union took the action in demand for higher wages the union represents about 28,000 people more than a fifth of the company’s total Workforce staff have been intermittently participating in protests in recent weeks outside the company’s offices in Soul a regional correspondent Yen Lee has been following velopments well this is an ongoing pay dispute negotiations started back in January ended March uh the management did announce a 5% uh wage hike but they dismissed demands for an extra day off work now what’s at stake are the bonuses union leaders want a simplified more transparent process based off the company’s profits and this is a company uh that makes some of the world’s most important and crucial products and I’m not just talking about smartphones but of course uh chips the union that’s at the heart of Friday’s strike action is the national Samsung Electronics Union it’s the company’s largest and they say that they represent over 20% of the workforce that said it’s unclear just how many people are participating in this walkout indeed union leaders have encouraged people to file for a day of leave this Friday and this is a day that squeezed between a public bank holiday and a weekend and because those going on strike don’t necessarily have to declare it it well it’s going to be really hard to figure out just who is genuinely taking part in this coordinated effort to walk off the job and who’s just gone off for a long weekend analysts also say that this timing the timing of this strike will thus have very little impact on the uh production line so for now it’s more symbolic more than anything because this is the first strike in Sansung electronics’s uh 55e history

Workers at tech giant Samsung Electronics in South Korea staged the first strike at the company on Friday, the head of a major union representing tens of thousands of people said. Management at the firm, the world’s biggest producer of memory chips, has been locked in negotiations with the union over wages and benefits since January but the two sides have failed to narrow their differences.
