Cathal Brugha Barracks in Rathmines earmarked as potential site for 1,000 new homes

  1. In the same week the Df is an international laughing stock you have a cabinet minister coming out with this… The df can’t catch a break at the moment.

This is just a huge fuck you to the defence forces from the fucking moron who told everyone to plant seeds at the start of the pandemic so we can still have salads.

  2. The site is basically across the canal from Portobello and a stone’s throw from Rathmines. Each 3-bed house will be going for 800k or more, with a few 2-bed going for 600k and those will be called “affordable”.

  3. There’s a decommissioned barracks here in Mullingar and someone suggested that it should be turned into apartments and the NIMBYs came out in force. It’s a decrepit old barracks and there’s nothing of interest to make it an historic site and have tours etc.

  4. It’s the only operational barracks left in Dublin. They still have McKee by the Phoenix Park, but it’s basically for admin only. And with its picturesque architecture, it won’t be long before the government eyes it for something else.

Many previous barracks around the city were sold off with the promise that they’d make Cathal Brugha state of the art. Of course I doubt anyone in the Defence Forces believed that.

  5. We’ve got plenty of shite quality buildings and disused or limited capability sites around Dublin, I don’t know why we’d tear down one of the few high quality Georgian buildings we have and build a massive housing project in what’s an important historical and symbolic site for the state which includes multiple listed buildings.

When people talk about historical elements of the country that should be protected this is the exact thing they should be looking at, not some dime a dozen bland brick house that was always meant as pile them in housing.

  6. I wonder what the government are going to do the day they run out of defence forces properties to sell.

  7. There’s already military personnel living in there. Turfing them out so Rathmines can have more overpriced accomodation is about right for this government.

Like, I’m all for building as much as we can to alleviate the housing crisis, but evicting low paid soldiers and their families is hardly a solution.

  8. I like people building houses but I dislike this, having mixed utility space in the city might be better in the long run then building houses. There better ways to build houses then just rinsing and repeating. But hopefully this is all a big load of bull shit for Eamon “my foot fits in my mouth” Ryan for votes in his constituency. Develop the space for military use and a emergency use would be better then housing.

Like building high rise houses rathgar and rathmines would be better then this but that would never happen so we have them full of bungalows cause that makes sense.
