‘A turning point’: Global condemnation of Israel after strike in Rafah, calls for ‘horror’ to end

warnings and fears from Washington warnings and fears uh from the international court of justice I’ll remind you the international court of justice said to Israel on Friday that it didn’t believe that it should go ahead with any um operation there because it could not guarantee the safety of civilians Israel thought it could guarantee the safety of civilians and Sunday night we saw uh this terrible fire in the tal Sultan area people sleeping outdoors in tents you know incinerated uh Israel is now saying well we have a report from an American News Network that is saying that Washington has been told by Israel that a a preliminary investigation shows that it was possibly shrapnel that ignited a petrol tank or a fuel tank uh in that in that camp and that’s what how the fire began Israel’s military prosecutor General however is inaugurating a proper uh independent inquiry she says it’s important to know the reasons and I have to say you know the reaction internationally really demonstrates that this may be one of those events that no one ever forgets and may be a turning point actually because you know we’ve heard from supporters of Israel uh including its um supporters in the Arab world and in Europe saying that this this is something different and and things have to change we heard from David C Cameron the British foreign minister strong Ally of Israel saying any inquiry has to be Swift comprehensive and transparent there’s a discussion right now in the EU about possible sanctions against Israel if it doesn’t oby the international court of justice and tonight the UN Security Council uh is likely to meet so all of those things let you know that this is a diplomatic crisis for Israel uh and that this it’s not over yet it’s not over yet and it is as that offensive as I said presses on in rough we have Spain in conjunction of course with Norway and Ireland forly recognizing Palestine take a listen to what the Spanish prime minister had to say a short while ago this is a historic decision that has a single goal to contribute to achieving peace between Israelis and Palestines the recognition of the State of Palestine is not only a matter of historical Justice with the legitimate aspirations of the Palestine people but it is also an imperative need to achieve peace there you heard uh from Pedro Sanchez here is speaking in English justifying why Madrid is doing this what reaction uh has all this been getting where you are it’s interesting there is you would have to call it a non- diplomatic spat between the foreign minister of Spain and the foreign minister of Israel uh he accuses he has been saying Israel cats that is Israel’s foreign minister has been saying this is a reward uh to Hamas a reward for its attacks of October the 7th and he’s gone one further tweeting today about the Spanish foreign minister who referred to um Palestine free from The River To The Sea I just have to say from The River To The Sea when it’s used by either side means there won’t be two states uh so he’s responded by putting up tweeting photos of her uh the Hamas leader the Iranian leader and saying that they all have the same aim I wonder if this hysterical reaction is actually partly to distract uh the eye from what the real issue is which is what is going to go ahead in Rafa uh and you know I have just been reading an Israeli analyst uh who describes Rafa as and I quote a black hole where the risks are certain and the rewards are dubious and he says that continuing at this point in the conflict you know five that this conflict this military operation is five months too late he is arguing uh and in fact what should have been done if it was to be done should have been done back in January now it’s nothing but a gamble so perhaps that’s also part of why we’re hearing this very non- diplomatic language from Jerusalem about Spain

Global condemnation poured in Monday over an Israeli strike that Gaza officials said killed 45 people in a camp housing displaced Palestinians. Israel’s military said it had launched an investigation into the incident, which was trenchantly criticised by several nations and organisations. FRANCE 24’s Irris Makler reports from Jerusalem.

  1. The camp is almost one mile away from where the missile attack on Hamas occurred. The killing of civilians is very unfortunate but there is more to this. We will have to wait until the investigation is completed.

  2. The recognition of the State of Israel in 1948 was a reward for Terrorism by The Irgun and the Lehi (the Stern Gang) ,the bombing of the King David Hotel killing 90 British citizens and soldiers , the Dier Yassin Massacre and others , so lets be fair and hold the founders of Israel , Ben Gurion , Begin , Shamir and others for the slaughter of innocent men women and children in order to steal their land. Palestinians will not forget so lets not use this silly narrative that the recogintion of the State of Palestine is a reward for Hamas. Hypocricy !

  3. The US has warned of potential sanctions for any country considering business deals with Iran, hours after India signed a 10-year contract to operate the new port with Tehran. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said, when asked about the deal, that the US sanctions on Iran are still in place and that Washington would continue to enforce them. "Any entity, anyone considering business deals with Iran – they need to be aware of the potential risks that they are opening themselves up to and the potential risk of sanctions," he said. (The US has imposed more than 600 sanctions on Iranian-related entities over the past three years).

  4. Lies. The Israeli strike was away from the population. The fire was caused by Hamas weapons which ignited. Why are Hamas flamable weapons near the people?😮
