‘Trying to give assurances’ to Ukraine: Biden to sign 10-year security agreement

happening right now President Biden is at the G7 Summit in Italy he’s currently in the middle of attending multiple working sessions with the other leaders from the Group of Seven Nations and later today the president will meet with Ukrainian president zalinski to sign a 10year security agreement between the US and Ukraine we’re covering all angles of this developing story and we go right to NBC News is Monica ala in Italy also joining us former spokesperson for the US mission to the United Nations Hagar shamali she also worked at the White House National Security Council and the treasury Department so Monica bring us up to speed on what’s Happening so far there well the president has been huddling with these G7 leaders for the last couple of hours in what’s known as working sessions and they have been discussing everything from the war in Ukraine to the war in Gaza and trying to come up with certain Solutions and agreements that as a group they can come out of this Summit and declare their intentions on and one of those really key action items is this idea that using Frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with more funding so that it can have more military aid seems like it’s something that is now going to be happening in the form of a $50 billion loan to Ukraine they believe that will happen at some point this year and there was agreement largely that this should happen in this manner but there was a little bit of disagreement on the details of EX exactly how that’s going to work and the mechanisms that will put it in place but the US really was pushing for this in addition to wanting all of the leaders to come out of these different sessions pledging to continue to really endorse the ceasefire deal for the war between Israel and Hamas that the president laid out about two weeks ago and that is something else they’re going to be discussing here Jose and then you will see the president alongside Ukrainian president zalinski for a joint news conference where they are expected to take some questions to talk about this long-term defense cooperation commitment and we know that the president apologized to president zilinski last week when they were together in France for how long it took for Congress to approve supplemental funding to try to get more weapon systems and air defense capabilities to Ukraine but that now he is essentially saying that everything possible the US can do and when world leaders come together in terms of the International Community that the president will continue to push for that but the backdrop and the context to all of that is that he can do that as long as he’s in office but he is facing re-elections certainly as are some of these other leaders who really are facing some shifting winds here in European politics so even if there are things that they put in place now it’s unclear that that could become undone if some of these leaders aren’t back at this meeting when they will convene again in 2025 so President Biden trying to send a signal to Russia specifically about the resolve of the United States when it comes to supporting Ukraine and on the commitment to really try to call out Russian aggression and they’re doing that in the form of some sanctions as well against china-based companies that are providing semiconductors to fuel the Russian war machine so you’re seeing that really as a geopolitical intent and messaging strategy from the United States here and that’s something that the president has been working on for some time and also will likely be speaking to when we hear from him a little bit later today here in southern Italy Jose Monica ala in southern Italy thank you so very much and we’ve been watching live pictures of President Biden alongside with the prime minister of Italy Mone as they have different meetings and different and this is a live picture right there on your screens mon I thank you and I want to ha let’s talk first about this 10 years Security deal between the United States and Ukraine what do we know about it how significant is it well we don’t have all the details of it just yet but the idea of it really is that Biden is trying to give assurances to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression something that is short of NATO membership right something where that it feels to Russia it’s a message to Russia that the US has Ukraine’s back and will for the next 10 years we will provide them with weapons we will provide them with technical assistance and intelligence cooperation so it’s it’s not fully an alliance but something where we have assurances where we’re going to have their back and like I said short of NATO membership and the critical part of it as Monica mentioned is that Biden doesn’t know if he’s going to win the election in November and so although this could be undone technically by President Trump uh former president Trump hopefully not future president Trump you you still it would be very difficult or ugly for for a future Administration a different Administration to undo that and that’s why President Biden is trying to do this immediately and get it done before the before the election you know it’s interesting because um Monica was talking about how there is a United feeling of uh you know the G7 how to deal with Russian aggression right Russia is not just standing by uh you know it just sent a a nuclear powered submarine three warships with supersonic missiles to Cuba for military exercise is quote unquote in the Caribbean Russia’s beefing up its ties to allies in in in South America I mean what’s going on 90 miles from our Shores yeah it feels a little 1962 is right it’s um I’m glad you raised this because it’s an important issue uh but it also shouldn’t be caused for alarm at the moment a lot of this is reflection of an international game if you will a scary game but a game nonetheless the Russia has moved warships on Wednesday they moved warships to Cuba for joint exercises with with the Cuban regime and and they’re expected to leave next Monday and it’s something the US is monitoring very closely but they’re not concerned because these are not warships that carry nuclear missiles uh it’s it’s really more part of a show of force and why that show of force is happening is it’s in response to the US approval to Ukrainian authorities to use Us weapons to Target Russian targets uh right outside the Ukraine’s second largest city of harke which Russia is pounding from within Russia’s borders and so to help Ukraine’s defense the US has finally allowed Ukraine to use American weapons only to Target those uh those targets right right across the border not to Target the Kremlin or anything else but Russia felt it had to show something in response do something in response and they came out with a lot of Bluster but and when they look at their tools and all the options they have this to me is a logical step that they’re going to try and do something that shows hey we’re here we’re not afraid to to move our warships here’s an ally of ours uh and that’s what it is but I don’t expect it to escalate any any further yeah I mean I’m all with you on that but the images of a nuclear powerered submarine going into Havana Harbor three warships with subsonic missiles on board is a pretty clear message by Russia as to who they see as their allies and what they are willing to do to keep and maintain that friendship agreement not only in Cuba let’s look what’s going on in Venezuela and Nicaragua and so many other places haar thank you so much for being with us it’s always a treat to speak with you e

  1. Are we really hearing this? So now we have to pay the Ukraine billions of dollars a year, for ten years? The Vietnam War didn't last ten years. Just swear our Army to allegiance to Ukraine, give them all our weapons and let them go fight the war. Sounds like the CIA is involved?

  2. A very, very bad deal for Americans, and even Ukrainians (who are now forced into an endless proxy war). No more forever wars. This is about corruption and contracts — not supporting democracy. Zelensky's term expired, he is no longer elected, he outlawed rival parties, consolidated all press into a state controlled org, and even tried to outlaw the orthodox church. Toxic guy.

  3. Won’t change anything. Ukraine is losing, Russians, winning, and nothing is going to change that. Not to mention that Zielinski’s term has ended, and there were no elections, which means by definition Ukraine is now a dictatorship.

  4. But, of course, this has nothing to do with Hunter's gigantic salary from Burisma. If it did, I'm sure the unbiased Media would be looking into it.

  5. Unilaterally – Without Congressional Authorization ? Biden seems to be in Too Deep to Get Out ? Tiptoeing toward Armageddon ? 😢

  6. Just extending this war for as long as they can. It won’t be long until Democrats try to put troops on the ground. Ukraine won’t have enough troops to last another 2 years.

  7. I thought at first criticism of Biden was unfair but now I can't lie from is policies poor speech poor leadership he's gotta Top 10 worst presidents of all time 🤣
