RTE: Why the reign of SUVs on Irish roads should end

  1. Weird non story. Petrol and diesel cars are already about to stop being produced over the next few years by most manufacturers. Then those old legacy gas guzzlers will eventually end up being traded in or recycled or scrapped. Is the next few years not fast enough? It’ll probably just be a money grabbing exercise to turn the public against them so they can hike the costs up to keep them on the road.

  2. I’m thinking of publishing a toilet book of awful SUV parking jobs around Ireland.

Dip into he Avoca car park and you’ll need a seat to process the sheer stupidity of people.

  3. Yeah let’s all go for electric SUVs

Imagine the chaos at all the new vast charging stations that will be needed along our motorways. Queuing for 2 hrs to get a spot so you can charge for 2 hrs before being able to continue driving.

Saw this as a reality in Norway where they are leading the way with electric cars. 12 to 20 charging stations all full.

Until the infrastructure arrives I ain’t changing. I’m driving an Arteon now but looking to move to a SUV due to an extra large dog!

  4. Genuine question – where is the big anti-SUV thing come from all of a sudden. I know there’s always been opposition or criticism but seems a bit more prominent in recent weeks?

  5. So would you rather have large families actively using two (or more) separate cars for tasks that can ultimately be completed by a single large SUV?

  6. Suddenly SUV are the issue.
Car are the issue, and to make people stop using them for day to day activities ar ditch them in general . Other things must happen. Like make amenities available through Ireland and be handy to get ther via public transport.

  7. A farmer’s son near me got one recently enough. He can barely fit it into his family driveway and it’s a bit like Canyonero when he’s driving on the roads around us. He has zero fucking use for it and claims he had to get one because of the wife and the new baby!

  8. Plenty of country lanes where I live. Many’s a time I’ve had to brush my car up against the hedgerows or dance on the end of a ditch for an SUV to pass.

Many Irish roads were simply not made for that size of car.

A “maximum width” on certain cars here wouldn’t go amiss.

  9. RTE is a bigger problem than SUV at this particular moment. We will move to EV out of necessity but how long will we keep that cash sucking zombie on life support?

  10. I come from a small farming village, where people actually have a good reason for having SUVs. So I forgive farm folk for buying them.

Other than that I think anyone who owns an SUV is an idiot. They are objectively bad vehicles. They are too big, they have a centre of gravity that is too high. These things mean they have more drag, weigh more, have terrible cornering abilities, are slow, use too much fuel and take up a load of space while not really being any bigger than a normal car on the inside.

They are a product for people who don’t understand what makes the product good. They are agricultural vehicles being bought by city folk for no practical reason. The only time I’d give someone a pass for buying one is if they have poor health and need a vehicle that’s easier to get in and out of. Even so, there are better options.

I don’t know where this will all end, I fully expect to see people driving Massy Fergusons around Dublin city in due course. The kids will start modding them out by attaching muck spreaders they’ll never use just to show off the fact they can buy expensive things they don’t need.

  11. Uh.. they need them for that one summer trip a year to the west of Ireland people might confuse them with the locals other wise.

  12. As someone who delivers in a vsn to Dublin City centre. Fuck you to every last cunt who owns an SUV. They think by having one that it comes with free parking in loading bays! A very special fuck yourself with a cactus if you drive an X5.. Always a wanker ever time.

  13. I respectfully disagree… SUVs have the hallmarks of versatility and space: Extra seating and more leg room, head room, etc., The average height of an Irish man is 178.9cm, while Irish women stand at 165.1cm. Relative to the majority of the world, it’s clear that we’re a nation of giants … With our sketchy weather, SUVs weigh more than cars and offer better handling in challenging road conditions…

  14. I drive a Jeep for work/pleasure
It’s more fuel efficient than my old Golf.
I’m safer in it than in a small car in the off chance I get into a crash.
    The extra space is wonderful.
    The tow hitch is useful.
The extra bit of go in the engine means it can actually pull a load safely.

I don’t begrudge anyone the decision to get an SUV or a Jeep. They’re nicer to drive. More useful if you do anything that requires moving loads , or trailers , And provided you don’t drive like a cunt , safer if you get into a smash.

With respect to the amount of space they use on the road ? It’s a pretty negligible difference even on narrow country lanes. Just drive with a degree of care and consideration and hug the ditch.

  15. I don’t really think SUVs are the problem but the idiots that drive them. So many parents making school runs and driving to football practice with the spatial awareness of a rhinoceros are all driving the largest SUV class.
But there are plenty of other idiots who drive like their Toyota Yaris needs the same amount of room on the road.
I do know alot of older people who drive smaller SUVs and it’s because it’s easier for them to get in and out of the vehicle which would be a reason I would be tempted to buy one.

  16. Why on earth do they need an SUV in a city? Anyone else notice the amount of cars around who just sit parked with the engines on? Baffling waste
