‘Number of Airbnb accommodations in Amsterdam down by three quarters’

  1. The number of accommodations in Amsterdam rented out on sites like Airbnb has dropped sharply. This spring there were still 18,715 locations in the city that were rented out, now there are only 4,128. The reason? A registration requirement.
This is according to figures from the municipality of Amsterdam which the Volkskrant writes about today. It’s not just about accommodations offered on Airbnb, but also on similar sites like Booking.com, Expedia, Tripadvisor and VRBO.
    Fine
Earlier this month, Amsterdam introduced a registration requirement for private vacation rentals. Only individuals who have registered with the municipality may offer their homes on rental sites. Those who have not registered risk a fine from next year.
A spokesperson for Airbnb confirmed to the Volkskrant that the ads of all individuals who have not registered, are automatically deactivated in Amsterdam. Many of the accommodations were unoccupied in the past year anyway.
    Prohibition on vacation rentals
The municipality of Amsterdam has already made several attempts to put an end to the rise of Airbnb in the city. For example, since last summer it is no longer possible to rent out homes to tourists in parts of Amsterdam’s inner city.

  2. Right now is the best time to travel. I can get From Jutland to Vilnius and back for just 5 euro and hotels and such are dirt cheap as well. If there’s some place in Europe you’ve always wanted to visit, it is worth taking a look at it.

  3. Did it affect real estate prices at all, or is it too soon to judge yet?

EDIT: Also curious about long term rental prices, since they should be more affected by AirBnB than house prices.

  4. The winners? Hotels!

Because, for some reason, AirBnBs bad, hotels good per popular sentiment 🤷🏼‍♂️
