Daily Covid death toll will no longer be published by Easter under plan to ‘live with Covid’, source says

  1. 1121 deaths recorded on tuesday, even noting the weekend lag that’s fucking high. Seven day Average of 360.

Constant hundreds of daily deaths, so no wonder they want to hide how they failed you.

  2. I think that’s reasonable – perhaps what we should concentrate now on is excess mortality. That will give a pretty clear answer to the question if covid is essentially an ugly flu now in almost fully vaxxed population, or if the situation remains lot worse.

    Or die with Covid…for many.

  5. The policy now is to make it as likely as possible that everyone will catch COVID, and individuals have little choice in the matter.

If you’ve got children at school, or work in a job where you mix with other people who can’t be legally compelled to take even basic precautions – well, you’re basically stuffed.

Try to do the right thing yourself, but also know you live in a World where a sizeable chunk of people around you will be knowingly irresponsible about spreading COVID if it makes their own lives easier.

  6. Hardcore make believe. Absolutely sticking their head in the sand and sticking fingers and going “La la la it’s over.”

  7. It’s time we faced the fact that COVID isn’t going away.

I’m not one of these “it’s just a flu” people (because, well, it isn’t) but we now have to live with it like the flu.

We’ve been given vaccines and guidance on limiting the spread and we now have to adapt.

Maybe one day we’ll be able to eradicate it completely but for now, just gotta live with it

  8. Huh? Can’t we just FOI’em every day then?

Even by Tory measures this is stupid.

  9. Like two weeks ago Google stopped showing the cases/deaths as the first result. I wonder if the govt made them do it.

  10. This is the same concept as living with Brexit…. Just don’t take photos of the queues on the A2 and there is no problem to worry about 😂

  11. Maybe now they can broadcast the daily cancer diagnoses and how many people who’ve died from cancer just to make the public at large overly paranoid about another disease, I mean why give in now after all the practice they’ve had 🙄.

  12. I would find it easier to live with covid if I had access to data Boris. We aren’t all risk taking spaffers. Some of us like to actually measure our risk.

  13. The reality is that the current vaccines just aren’t good enough to resume life as normal(pre-2020). This isn’t the flu or even a bad cold, every time you get sick with it you are weakening your immune system, risking long Covid, scarring your lungs and heavily damaging your heart and brain. Risking further mutations (that potentially could be even deadlier). So frankly the idea that we can just have an annual Covid season is clearly absurd at this point.

Now Omicron is not actually that much less virulent than other strains. But before we can resume and return to pre-2020 normality, we need vaccines that prevent infection, not just keep us out of hospitals, we need antivirals to be mass produced and readily available, and we need better testing and tracing methods. This pretending that Covid doesn’t exist anymore is beyond foolish and incredibly dangerous.

  14. How are we going to “live with covid” when me and everyone I know is basically still not really going out at all because we know we’re in the middle of a pandemic shitstorm still? And especially now the government seems keen that we should basically ALL get Covid, fuck this shit, I am done.

  15. We don’t publish daily death tolls for other causes of death. I’d love to see the same desire for immediate change that covid caused for the larger killers.

  16. Good news! It must be measured, but it’s so hard to tell what’s incidental with hospitalisations and less so deaths.

We don’t have 20-30k people dying of flu this year for various reasons, we need to really get used to these things happening. Vaccinate who wants to be vaccinated, invest more in the NHS and let’s move on.

  17. So many people have Omi now that surely the deaths ‘with’ Omi will be crazy high even if it was a cause of death?

Upto 50 percent of Omi hospitalisations were reported to be incidental..

  18. What’s the problem with living with covid and reporting the deaths? Think we don’t know how many people die of other diseases?

  19. It isn’t accurate anyway. It is just a recording of people who died who had tested positive in the last 28 days.

If they were publishing actual covid deaths I might have a problem with this. I prefer to use how congested ICU beds are. As that is a better indication of how hospitals are coping.

  20. I’d rather they announce death toll but not positive cases anymore. All that matters now is reducing the death toll so I think that’s what they should be publishing.

  21. Johnson wallpapering over the cracking plaster again.

Isn’t it high time we had a better decorator?
