To keep top job, ‘lots of negotiations’ lie ahead for von der Leyen with Greens and Grand Coalition

we can now bring in our European Affairs editor Armen George and Armen so much happened last night what’s your take well danana I think we can say the political Center has held in the European Parliament there was a rightward shift of course there is a rightward shift but a pro-eu coalition is now a realistic scenario in the European Parliament however we also have to look at the impact of the the outcome of this election on National capitals that’s very important and the results or I should say provisional results because the European Parliament is still calling them provisional as of this morning uh the uh the the impact is putting a lot of pressure on several governing parties across the EU most notably of course in France as we’ve just heard but also in Berlin where we had this sharp uh rise of the alternative for Germany uh and of course uh the big win by the center right in Germany both of those things putting pressure on Olaf Schultz the chancellor and his social Democrats or SPD but also if we look at a few other capitals we see Pedro Sanchez now Under Pressure because of these uh because of the European election with the center right PP or conservative party confirming its ascendancy now from uh the last national elections there uh we can see also Centrist coalitions in Denmark and in Estonia losing ground in these European election provisional results so it’s important that we look not just at the European Parliament but also the impact on the the mood and the kind of political wins in National capitals across the EU as well Armen uh as you were speaking there we’re actually showing images of Ursula Von speaking from last night she clearly is quite confident uh is she safe and secure for a second term well she’s looking all right at the moment in the sense that U you know that we we’re talking before the election about a possible tie up between the EP so the central right group and the hard right European conservatives and reformists that was always going to be a very difficult thing anyway uh even if the numbers were going to be there because of differences between those two groups on the rule of law and other issues but as it happens the numbers are simply not there now according to the provisional results the numbers are not there for a majority between the EP and the ECR so that means uh that Osa felion doesn’t need uh Georgia Maloney the head of the ECR to do any kind of deal there is now the the the the numbers now point to a Centrist majority quite possibly backing Ursula fondel liion for a second term that would be the ep the Socialist and Democrats and the renew group so those would be the kind of the three building blocks of her second term in theory uh yes it’s true that in recent weeks uh president macon’s allies dropped this name Mario dragi the former former Italian Prime Minister it seemed that the French were interested in having an alternative TOA felion for a second term but uh I’m wondering now with this breaking news that we’ve had in France as of last night and as this story develops whether now M and his allies in uh the European Parliament are going to have the bandwidth and the mental sort of space and energy to try and maneuver illa ferion out or are they going to focus on the national Dimension given that they do seem to be in almost crisis mode here it seems to be in their place right now thank you very much for that Arman Arman georan there we can now bring in UL toyu director of the global policy Center at IE University thank you very much for joining us here uh on France 24 now the far right made huge gains in France but not overall in Europe is that a fair assessment yeah definitely I think uh the that the composition of the European Parliament is better than expected there’s of course a surge but the surge is not greater than what has happened in 2019 but we are also seeing kind of a stable Social Democrat group and a rise in European people’s party so this is this is Shing as that yes there was a forr right surge but the situation is a bit better than expected for for the mainstream politics oh how would you uh view the result uh over in the largest country in the European Union Germany yeah the situation is quite worrying in in in Germany when we look at uh look at the situation for the mainstream parties and and and the governing Coalition indeed but um different than France I think Germany does not necessarily have this tradition of going to snap election so my my my personal take very hot take at this point is is that we will still see a continuation of the government but it’s going to be more difficult for me the key question is however Germany is a key country moving forward when it comes to the EU budget financing of priorities at the EU level and with this drastic situation at a national level I wonder if Germany will be able to carry out the burden for the Europeans and what about Ursula Vine you heard that I was speaking to our European Affairs editor and he says things are looking pretty good for her is her job safe yeah I think undering is quite euphoric I have seen her in the European Parliament last night and she was happier than ever so she feels confident but what we hear in here in Brussels is that even if there are like 40 extra seats in between European People’s Party snd group and renew so per Grand Coalition with the support there might be some dropouts from this so there’s an encouragement for keeping the greens in the loop and also opening up the way to kind of saving the green deal for that so I think yes she is in a more uh positive situation for keeping the job but I think she has still lots of negotiations to do not just with the ground Coalition but also maybe uh adding in the the the greens based on this composition which we have which we are seeing uh throughout Europe can we uh is it safe to say that Europe STS when it comes to things like the war in Ukraine are set to continue even though we’re seeing huge upheaval here in France mhm mhm yeah I think what what is coming out of this election is that this pro- democracy Pro Ukraine alliances is is is quite there and and and and even the the there are differences between member states and and political groups this Centrist Grand Coalition we can call it now super Grand Coalition is going to move forward and if we can add one more agenda item I think competitiveness even becoming also a part of the idea I heard many green officials linking the green deal to competitiveness which didn’t necessarily happen in 2019 so the center is sharing some of the some of the key assessments moving forward for the future of the year to we’re goingon to have to leave with that thank you very much for joining us on the program today thank you

As the dust settled Monday from EU elections, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen appeared in prime position to secure a new term — but she’ll need to wheel and deal to lock it in. While the headline from the night was gains for the far right that unleashed a political earthquake in France, German conservative von der Leyen, 65, appeared among the other main winners. She saw her centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) strengthen its grip on first place in the European Parliament — as centrist forces maintained an overall majority. For in-depth analysis on the centrists’ overall performance, faced with a far-right surge, FRANCE 24’s Delano D’Souza is joined by fellow journalist Armen Georgian and Ilke Toygur, Director of the Global Policy Center at IE University.

  1. Shame on you, after 9 months of an all-out attack with the help of America and England and the complete destruction of Gaza and the killing of 40,000 Palestinians, you released only 4 prisoners.

  2. Fire Von Der Leyen and the whole commission and get rid of the political leadership in EU ! Dissolve EU and the whole situation and give the countries their freedom back !

  3. If Leyen refuse to include concepts from the right, the blowback and national election parties calls for leaving EU will only increase, she better choose wisely

  4. Greens in Germany had a total debacle at these elections for their warmongering behaviour ! Baerbock should retreat and not make vdLeyen President of Commission again !

  5. When a WEF agenda contributor is chief of the EU. What did you expect? Golden boy/ girls will be dropping out fast. MACRON was the first one!

  6. Why would Von Der Leyer need to negotiate with the greens to keep the presidency? The greens party lost 18 seats, her party gained 10 seats and her party, the centre-left S&D and the centrist Renew party still have a majority all together.

The greens are irrelevant, only the Left party has less seats than them.

  7. 3/4 of Europe is not France & Germany. This is a European-wide election.

Centre-Left, Centre & Centre-Right MEPs have a super majority (3/5) in the EU Parliament.

If the Left votes against the Far-Right, that super majority turns into an absolute (4/5) majority.

The Far-Right went up by 9 MEPs.
