Leo Varadkar says the next Irish government should start actively preparing for unification…

  1. Interesting timing. Leo Varadkar hasn’t said if he’ll stand in the next election or stand down. If he runs again, he may want something more to do than just be a TD. Maybe he’s fishing for a new role?

  2. It’s gas to me that Leo was Taoiseach for what… five years between his two stints, and his party has basically been ruling the roost for what, thirteen fucking years and he’s now saying it should be someone else’s responsibilty.

If you needed one statement to sum up Fine Gael’s governance, that’s it.

  3. Jesus fucking christ, why is this man still being approached for comments?! He had his time, he fucked us up, he should fuck right off.

  4. Wasn’t unification a big part of the old SF objective? Probably just Leo and FG throwing the cat amoungest the pigeons to piss off Scary Lou ad Co.

  5. What piss is this?
No one wants to know what that clown cock thinks

  6. So you can’t make a start on it now, then ?

Unless a snap election is called, there’s the best part of a year to go till the next election, but apparently, they can’t even start work on logistics of it

  7. they ought to prepare some houses…. but that would devalue real estate so obviously not.

  8. Can’t stand this guy, utterly spineless! He had his time in power and achieved absolutely nothing. He deserves an award for deflection and assigning blame elsewhere, never his own or parties fault but someone else. The country is far worse for having had him in power. Now kindly go and emigrate if at all possible. Can anyone name a single positive thing he did while he was Taoiseach?
    Leaky Leo

  9. Anyone that has visited the north, lived in it, or drove through it. Know that it’s still a deeply divided place.

How do we unify with a people and place, that appear to very reluctant to create unity amongst themselves after 20+ years of a peace agreement that lead the foundations for said much needed reconciliation.

Personally, until they get their house in order, and we do ours, I don’t want it.

  10. I think “Can’t someone else do it?” is Fine Gael’s motto.

  11. Fuck yeah. Smartest thing the aul wingnut has said in the last 8 years.

  12. You’ve left a fair few things we need to sort out first, thanks though

  13. He must see himself as the Dunphy & Giles of political commentary.

  14. I’d rather unification under the crown that have FG rule over me.

  15. You may criticise the fact that Leo is saying it but I’m glad someone is.

  16. Back under the union Jack! Ha! Arise Sir Leo,Knight of the realm…I remember George Hook (FG) once saying ” If I liVeD iN eNgLaNd, I wOuLd HaVe A kNiGhThOoD bY nOw!” (Building houses in Haiti [75years old])

  17. Yeah fuck off Leo nobody asked for your 2 cents

    Cuntface cheats cheats us all

  18. Pushing past the inevitable Leo hate posts – just look at the numbers.

The numbers favour both Scottish independence and Irish unification before 2050. The first rule in politics is -> “learn to count”.

Never mind the ideology, the personalities, its an irrelevancy. Shinners hate Varadkar, I get that.

The numbers indicate to we may have to **really** do this not just simply sing boozy songs in the pub about it.

What Shinners need to understand though is, a UI is bigger than them. It includes the 75% of people who didn’t vote SF in the Republic at the last election and the 62% of people in NI who didn’t vote SF at the last election.

A UI really means a whole bunch of things that misty eyed four green field Republicans won’t like.

    * A UI by way of a sizeable Unionist minority will be alot more pro-Brit than the “West Brits” SF likes to scapegoat in “D4” right now
    * A UI will almost certainly have to join NATO
    * The flag will probably stay the same
    * Bunreacht na hEireann will have to change
    * The nature of the state will likely change to substantial federalism
    * There is a real question as to what will happen in Loyalist areas and acceptance of the authority of a unified state

There really is a non-zero chance that despite best efforts a change in status for NI will result in some kind of renewed paramilitary activity, first on the loyalist side and then perhaps on the nationalist side too.

Its easy to pillory Redmonite FFG and the D4 media but, much harder to come up with credible answers on how to peacefully transition to a UI and to face the inevitable drop in living standards that the now progressive plural Republic will experience.

And then there’s the nature of our politics – a former loyalist at the conference put it well – how does NI join in with the progressive, liberal democracy down south – because Northern politics is completely fncked at the best of times.

I look at the likes of the Healy Raes making entire careers out of “showing them up there in Dublin we won’t stop drink driving” or whatever BS it is today the Raes are selling and then I imagine entire parties of disgruntled unionist and loyalist parties – not just single digit TDs but perhaps 100 of a similar disruptive mindset.

    What coalitions will emerge ?

None of this is simple and TBH the eejits who claim otherwise – should be the last people you listen to.

  19. Leo likes to say a lot of things. Doesn’t like to *do* much of anything, mind you.

  20. Man should have a bit of self awareness, recognise that the best thing that has happened in his party over the last 5 years was him quitting and should keep him mouth shut until he can take his cushy consultant role in industry after the next GE.

  21. hating FG aside, Harris is infinitely more likeable than this absolute slug.

  22. It’s nice that sometimes he comes out throws some poo poo into the proverbial fan then disappears again, surely FFFG appreciates this as well.

  23. When will he do his Sunday World ad of him sitting in a press like Bertie?
