It is easier to afford a home in most markets if you have 2 incomes. And most US housing stock is is not supposed to be single occupancy
because old people were not entitled to so much luxury meat they used to eat traditional low cost food
During my first 4 years in California I rented a room in various homes, never went out to eat, ate leftovers at work whenever I could and took the train to work.
