The high cost of living is still biting the UK. Many don’t think the election will change anything

Immediately? No.
But in the long term it would be nice to have a government with some level of fiscal responsibility. Between austerity, brexit, covid, and general government, the Tories have shown that this isn’t them. We’re still paying for mistakes over a decade old. Hopefully our next government will be better, but only time will tell.
The country is crying out for change and Labour’s response is ‘if it is broke, don’t fix it’.
energy is the source of everything. high energy costs trickle through and make everything downstream more expensive. we can’t control how much energy other countries output. as for ourselves, we have committed to making energy as expensive as possible. so yes, the election wont change anything. Labour with their absolutely delusional “GB energy” will likely make it worse.
The issue with the UK, isn’t that many people don’t think the election will change anything, or that many people don’t think that Labour and the Tories are any different.
It’s that many don’t think.
This is the electorate that gave us past hits like Brexit, 15 years of Corrupt Tories, and given the chance to correct past mistakes, starts voting for Nigel.
So vote for an alternative. It won’t immediately fix it but the metrics will shift enough to get the main parties to re assess. The arguments against a third option are shit . We are here! How did we get here? The duopoly of Lab/Con pact.
Of course it won’t. It’s 2029 and most realistically 2034 and beyond before you see anything if the public can stay the course. What do people actually fucking expect – reversing 14 years of damage before the end of the summer? If people are stupid enough to expect that – what are we saying here? Why even bother voting? Actually why not keep it more authentic and genuine and give Rishi his first elected win? You know he doesn’t want that but fuck what he wants, am I right? We want some of that genuine and authentic Tory led Social Depravity and Poverty being inflicted on the poorest members of society, & not some of that watered down Labour attempts.
If everyone thinks labour is going to change anything to make living standards or quality of life in this country better you are seriously mistaken. Ok they might but we will be taxed accordingly.
To be fair we have the political choice of being fed shit through our mouths or shoved back up our asses
Neither is a great choice but one of them VERY much is the worse option
That’s not true. Election will make things worse once the also corrupt Labour wins.
I just don’t understand how the narrative seems to be “inflation is coming down, we’ve solved the cost of living crisis!”
That’s like sinking in quicksand up to your neck and then when you stop sinking someone else coming along to say “you’ve stopped sinking, your problem is solved!”. But you’re still stuck in quicksand.
When do we start to help people *out* of the quicksand?
I’m a contractor for a polling company and as you can imagine with the upcoming general election we’ve been extremely busy talking to lots and lots of people every day across the country about everything politics and current issues and boy oh boy… lots of jaded and angry people out there no matter which party they’ve voted for/will vote for. Can’t say I blame them but many people are disengaged and I suspect turnout for the election will be lower.
I’ve just come back from France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Doing food shopping there literally made me angry at how expensive everything is in the UK. .
It puts a lot of things about the UK’s current state into perspective.
Because it won’t be an immediate change. I think everyone knows this. There is no magic bullet.
What can be done is to make sure the strain is put most on those that can handle it.
I atleast remain hopeful that with a Labour government we will at least have some adults in charge who are not making up nonsense like national service etc and who I hope have an actual long term view of where to take the nation instead of making it up on the fly.
Nothing will change until the country as a whole decides that building houses is OK.
American here. If you think you have it bad, look at our choices.
Our problems are similar though. The system has worked, perfectly. It puts most of the money in the hands of a few people.
That’s hardly surprising, there’s been a very concerted effort from right wing thinktanks to spread the idea that politicians are all the same, neither side will help you etc on top of the campaigns to discredit Labour economics.
Make no mistake this is a deliberate idea to keep the right wing in power. It keeps people apathetic, and if you all you have is apathy and bitterness then you’re either going to not vote or be easier to ply with populism and austerity – neither of which actually work but pander towards anger very well.
It isn’t a coincidence that so many people defend Tory policies with “well imagine if Labour got in!” instead of the policy’s own merits.
It will get worse under labour, due to labours policies. In 5 years they will lose if the tories ditch their lib dem shite and actually have some self belief in Conservative policies
For years I was told wait for Labour’s manifesto before judging, was insulted repeatedly as well.
Well now it’s here and it’s even worse than I was expecting.
They’re rolling the red carpet out for reform to swoop in 5 years time.
All a labour government will bring is less cronyism for maybe 3 years tops. Then they will start…
Only real change as in Proportional representation and 4/5 parties representing the people will make actual change.
The tories and labour have got it easy. PR would change all of that by creating real competition. Without competition MP’s don’t bother…..
Reform might get 1 MP if they are lucky…..not because rheybdont have enough support. Just because of First past the post.
There is no money for any government to improve things. Taxes will have to pay for the things you want. Take your pick of the liars with empty promises.
Don’t worry about the MPs they will be ok
The introduction of a new party isn’t going to magically fix our problems. Tories believed that Austerity was going to be the tough love this country needed to succeed. They were wrong. And now we’re even deeper into the crisis and Labour will have their own idea about what the country needs to succeed.
The country is quite *significantly* damaged with everything that’s happened to it as a *direct* result of 14 years of Tory policy. So while yes, it is a step forward that Tories are no longer making policy any more, Labour is not necessarily the cure. It’s *incredibly* hard to simply take over government, let alone turn around a ship sinking this badly.
I think the best we can hope for is aggregate data trending in the right directions. Because lord knows nothing has been trending the right direction under Tory rule. Whether that translates to real world experiences and increases in standards of living is something we can remain cautiously optimistic for, but we have to acknowledge most of Labours efforts will be put into getting us back to square one… We’re probably not going to see any forward progress from where we were in ~2008. Labour won’t save the country, but it will hopefully get us out of the hole we’re in so we can see the path to save the country. Because at the moment, salvation is not on the table at all.
But then again, there is *no* party offering a path to salvation. And if they say they can do it, they’re lying to you. The best deal we have right now is undoing some of the damage done in the last 14 years, and do it quickly.
It occurred to me that if Starmer hadn’t purged the left from Labour, this election would be historical. A left-leaning Labour candidate would be able to get a huge majority right now, and we could have witnessed a true upheaval of the status quo.
Instead, Starmer has essentially infiltrated the party and sabotaged the left’s first true opportunity in decades, in the name of maintaining the status quo and protecting the powerful.
I think we’re looking at our equivalent of Japans ‘Lost Decades’, it’s going to take a long time for things to get back to how they were, if indeed they ever do.
Proof that the Tories and Labour are both the same. Vote Reform UK!

Because it won’t. And that’s not a partisan perspective. It’s just maths. Wealth inequality is the root cause of all these economic issues. No party except the Green has mentioned anything in their manifestos.
So no, nothing will change
Nothing radical is going to happen but I expect some subtle improvements straight away and then for broader improvements as a holistic approach to healing the country begins. It’s in a hell of a bad state now so the task ahead for the incoming government is immense.
Unfortunately the economy is what it is. No matter what party is in power it still has to work with the money that is available.
Given that, there are things that Labour could do – strength HNRC to deal with high level avoidance and evasion. Strengthen the investigative units in all of the departments to avoid waste. Set up better supervisory bodies for each department that uses professionals in the field. Hopefully, we might get solutions that really work?
There are areas where outsourcing does actually work. Does the NHS need any internal laundry service or cleaners? Absolutely not.
Engineering services are another matter. It ranges from routine light bulb changes upto complex upgrade projects and repair and maintenance on complex and life-critical machines, so using an engineering management company makes sense.
Outsourcing is not necessarily a ‘bad thing’. But it needs to managed by departments in a careful manner.
As inept & incompetent the Cons are…I just cannot believe a Labour Govt will be Stellar Efficient, and any different. There is a finite amount of Dosh. The UK has a Massive Debt Bubble – Facts all ppl conveniently ignore. Interest rates are high to keep a lid on Inflation. It cost more to borrow for the Govt. So are TAXES the Answer & Option for Labour ? Well, with a vast majority in Parliament the only outcome I see is an arrogant lot within 6 months, deflecting all public criticism on the roll out of more *NEW* Taxes squeezing all avenues to create a revenue stream to fund Labour’s plans. So the question I have is:
**Will the Country really be Voting for more Taxes ??? Am not Voting to be More Poor.**
It would be nice to have a government that, well, governs. But that’s like hoping the organisation I work in to actually be organised.
Correct. Labour won’t change anytime. Our wealth will continue to get siphoned up to the already very very rich. Meanwhile culture war nonsense will be used as a distraction tactic.
It wont. Unfortunately prices have increased and they will stay increased. The sad truth of living in poverty. I work full time and have responsibilitys. I’ve never lived beyond my means. But now i work 50 hours a week to just pay my essentials and have very little to zero disposable income. Im absolutely dreading my car insurance renewal once its due next month. Sooner or later this bubble has to pop. The majority which is the working class need to hit the streets in mass protest to bring about change. Theres literally no reward for going to work now. I’ve noticed my mental health and physical health has changed because of this crisis.
Democracy don’t change anything, is always the same thiefs under different banners….
Both the Tories and Labour are 2 cheeks of the same backside. We badly need electoral reform.
But another 14 years of the same will…
Its easy to see who is writing this.
The green manifesto is where it’s at. Tax the wealthy. Fix the inequality.
