Govt makes life harder with the cost of living, high rent prices, expensive houses, ridiculous childcare expenses, and poor public transport.
Then the govt is wondering why the people are depressed.
Proceeds to cut the benefits
Not sure how that works as people with “milder” mental health problems don’t qualify for PIP anyway.
The best way to help depression is to give someone a purpose, no better way than through work. Arbeit macht frei
‘We’ve cut your payments but we recommend using these crystals and essential oils’.
‘How do I claim them?’
‘Oh no it’s just a recommendation, you’ll have to buy them yourself, I can offer you these three magic beans though if that helps?’.
I mean it would be nice to have both a Robust welfare state AND a functioning mental health service which allows those with mental health disorders to get the support they need so that they can re-enter society and find (hopefully) fulfilling work.
But maybe that’s just me 😅
Will probably get downvoted for this but I would much rather they funnel the benefit payments into the nhs’s mental health departments, there are so many people who abuse the benefits systems and the money would be better spent elsewhere
In terms of the depression side of things I’m happy they are bringing in more therapy options, there are so many people who don’t have access to therapy because of the cost or lack of funding in the nhs and just throwing benefit payments at them and letting them dive deeper into depression by not having to leave the house doesn’t help
Depression is unfortunately a very vicious cycle and it would be very good if people can be pulled out of it in the “milder” stages
(I know it’s not this black and white but it’s just my take on it)
People with Mild mental health issues shouldn’t be in pip anyway.
But
Mental health access is so poor you can’t even get to a therapist unless you have extreme mental health issues. I tried. Got told I’m a prime candidate for therapy. But the waiting list was years long, and you only get added to the list after you’ve tried to commit suicide. So I was signed off and given drugs instead.
God help people who need more support. (he’s more likely to exist than and NHS therapist)
Wait, people get free money for depression and anxiety?
I work hard, sometimes long hours, pay all my bills and pay my way which is almost impossible in today’s economy, leading to bouts of depression and anxiety. All this so that 20% of my wages can pay for someone to stay at home with depression and anxiety?
Downvote me all you want but the only thing that has helped my depression/anxiety in the past is getting a job. Antidepressants have not worked. Therapists just tell me things that I have already read on Google.
I firmly believe that rotting in the house all day just gives you more time to think things over and leaves you worse off. There’s a reason that mental health plummeted during covid.
The mysteries of British humor never fail to entertain!
Labour are likely to do the same. It does seem better to fix a illness if it can be fixed, rather than just support someone financially while leaving them with that illness.
