Irish baron turns estate he inherited into wildlife oasis

  1. Incorrect title. Under the Irish Constitution all Irish citizens are precluded from holding any form of peerage and all former peerages were abolished post-independence. This individual is a British national who still holds ownership over land in Ireland as a significant amount of legal arrangements under the old colonial feudal system were carried over into the Republic of Ireland for whatever reason.

Another famous example is the still active leaseholds of which our National Library is one and due to this archaic colonial vestige in our legal system Ireland pays rent to a member of the British aristocracy and will continue to do so as there is no political will to fully remove the last of Ireland’s colonial past. The Earl of Pembroke also holds the leasehold to Merrion Square and many of the surrounding buildings and the state pays him rent every year.

  2. I have no problem with this Randall Plunkett fella inheriting land, even a lot of it. We haven’t banned being wealthy. And it seems like he’s using the land in the public interest so let him continue, I say. I do take issue with referring to him as a baron or or suggesting that he should be addressed as “Lord Dunsany”. Leave the aristocracy in the past, or the UK.
