No worry’s i`m sure google and facebook can protect their tax heaven.
In a surprise to absolutely nobody, a tiny neutral island without enemies does not burn taxpayer money on a military that would be ineffective against any possible adversaries anyway…
Did anyone think they could?
Country’s that are “neutral” but have no meaningful ways to protect themselves is how you end up getting Belgium’d.
Since the UK defends the Irish island there is no real Irish sovereignty, especially now with mega corporations using the nation as a parking lot.
Their whole Navy has 1000 crew. The Russians have more on a single group of ships or one rather badly built carrier.
However honestly… Who will invade them? And ehat gain…
Uk has vested intrested in defence of that sphere of world also. UK as an NATO Member state has alot og potential support. So… Ireland is pretty safe.
Most European Armies are more “parade forces” to assure the ever anxious and sovereignty minded.
Realistically the UK would be the ones to defend in the event of attack. Both culturally and strategically they have an invested interest not to let Ireland be invaded.
Time to join NATO.
No one is surprised by this, but I got to wonder what the point is for going out and saying these things to the free press?
Some top general in Sweden about 10 years ago went out and told everyone that Sweden can only be defended for a couple of weeks, while I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about I really don’t get why they think it’s a good idea to say this to the media, except as pressure to demand more defence spending and personel increase which could be a reasonable I guess.
But there has to be better ways to ask for that which don’t demoralize the public in case of attack and doesn’t aid hostile propaganda, like sputnik (the russian media agency) and RT still often refers to this statement when ever they write anything about Sweden and military, even though the defence capabilities has been significantly beefed up in the last years, but still I’d guess it’s still a similar situation, a question of a few weeks or maybe a month at best.
Honestly, even aside from defense, I’d think that there’s a good argument for major civilian airports to have primary radars. Depending on the remote aircraft’s instruments and sensors to be functional makes for a more-fragile system.
Fix the health system first, the infrastructure, provide better school facilities for people who dont live in dublin 4 etc etc
Then we can talk about buying a pointless armed forces
