The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, performed Neil Young’s 1989 Rockin’ in the Free World at a bar in Kyiv during a visit on Wednesday night.

He was called on stage by the frontman of Ukrainian rock group 19.99, before he played guitar. Young’s song was written in 1989 after he was denied an opportunity to perform in the Soviet Union and was released as the Berlin Wall came down. The choice of song underscored Blinken’s support for Ukraine as Russia steps up attacks on the city of Kharkiv

Before the performance, in a message to Ukrainians Blinken said: ‘So much of the world is with you. And they’re fighting, not just for a free Ukraine, but for the free world. And the free world is with you too. So maybe we can try something.’ Blinken is known for combining ‘music with diplomacy’, and launched an initiative in 2021 through the state department to realise that goal

Rockin' in the Free World

  2. For a left leaning rag, sure seems like almost all comments agree with me, this liberal administration is completely Nuts!

  4. The West is turning the tide of war and these people with no credibility want us all to believe were failing. People check into this look at the other perspective we can win this war we can do this it only takes a small effort on our parts it seems like a lot of money but in the scheme of things is not true at all.

  5. Here’s how out of touch these geeks are. That song is not an anthem praising America. It’s a song about what a disgrace the American govt is. “People living in the streets people sleeping in their shoes” “we have a kinder gentler machine gun hand”

  6. We would not be here if it weren't for the courage and sacrifices of our parents and grandparents that fought WW2. Not all wars have moral equivalence.

  7. Blinken is the co-founder of WestExec Advisors, a private consulting firm that secures Pentagon contracts for weapons manufacturers and tech companies. Boeing is a former client of Blinken's during his tenure at WestExec Advisors. in fact, so many high ranking Biden administration officials previously worked in senior positions for WestExec, including Avril Haines (Biden's Director of National Intelligence , former CIA director), Julianne Smith (Biden's permanent representative to NATO), Jen Psaki (Biden's former Press Secretary, now MSNBC host), Daniel Shapiro (former US ambassador to Israel), Colin Thomas-Jensen (National Security advisor to the CIA-linked USAID), and Michele Flournoy (Blinken's fellow WestExec co-founder, who worked in senior foreign policy/intelligence positions for the Clinton and Obama admins and was floated as Biden's Defense Secretary).

these are the people running the institution's of the world's most powerful nation. look into their dealings with Boeing, with Meta, with Saudi-linked SoftBank, and more… these people obviously represent corporate interest and embody the rot within the Democratic party

  8. Use a Gibson at least. That Epihone was made in China, and just like the most the gears the band were using… What would the old Neil say about this?
