Although I disagree with Germany’s position, in reality it is well positioned to serve as a mediator between Russia and the West with no other alternatives.
Erdogan certainly can’t be trusted to fulfill this role and giving him the opportunity would further fuel and legitimize his regime. There is nobody else. India is too far away, Israel is too busy with their own conquest…
If this is because of WWII in which Germans killed a large number of Russians, I don’t get it. The Germans also killed quite a lot of Ukrainians, Polish and Romanians, among many others. So why not support Ukrainians now when they are in danger? A tiny bit of Wiedergutmachung is too much to ask for?
