Several days later, his younger son, Prince Manuel, was proclaimed king of Portugal.
He was to be the last of the Braganza-Saxe-Coburg and Gotha dynasty and the final king of Portugal.
His reign ended with the fall of the monarchy during the 5 October 1910 revolution, and Manuel lived the rest of his life in exile in England.
