2021 was the most competitive year for smartphone sales in Europe: The leader of the pack changed four times throughout.

  1. Moving over to the full year results, Samsung managed to win out here too, with 32% market share – unchanged from 2020, as a matter of fact.

Apple followed with 26%, growing slightly from 22% in 2020, then came Xiaomi with 20% (up from 14%), Oppo with 8% (up from 5%), Realme with 2% (up from 1%), and vivo with 1% (same as the year before).

Throughout the year, Samsung led most of the time, but Apple was No.1 twice, and Xiaomi once in June.

In December, Apple reached its highest ever market share in Europe, while Xiaomi ended 2021 with the highest yearly sales ever in the continent.

Oppo, vivo, and Realme also had their best year ever in Europe last year.

  2. Wow I didn’t know that Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi have such a higher market share than almost everyone else other than Oppo.

  3. Can confirm, bought a Galaxy S21 Ultra this year. Great phone would recommend if you can afford it or justify the price in your budget. But there are good phones for much lower prices. It would be nice to see a competitive European manufacturer in the market. Nokia did have a sort of revival but I am pretty sure that it was just a Chinese manufacturer that licensed the brand.

  4. The great thing about smartphones is that the evolution has completely stagnated, nothing interesting has come along in five years. Which means you can buy a 300 euro phone that is more or less indistinguishable from a 1000 euro phone.

I guess the folding phones are the new thing, but we’ll have to see if they’ll become viable as a mainstream product.

  5. Too bad huawei fell out of the race with their lack of google services. They really made much better phones than samsung spec-wise
