For context, this is the Bescheid for 2020 and I have opted out of church taxes sometime early 2020 (can’t remember exactly when). But I do not understand why I should have paid 774.81 (or 713.92) of church taxes. Is there a simple explanation?

  1. Send the confirmation of leaving the church to the Finanzamt.

  2. I guess, you got a larger salary increase during the year?

Because the KiSt is not calculated by summing up the months until you left, but by taking the whole year, calculating KiSt thereon and multiplying it by x/12, where x is the month until you were part of the church.

  3. Did you also leave church?

It is not a simple opt-in and opt-out as you feel.

You need to legally leave the church.

  4. This can also happen at the yearly tax declaration when you have left church but your wife/husband has not and your salary is higher. Your income has to compensate your partners income and you have to pay the difference ( not easy to explain).

Happend to us, I never was signed for church tax but my wife was.

One year I had to pay about 1000€ in church tax for her and told her to get out of church ( she’s not really religious) or go to church every sunday and pray for my soul. Nobody would pay a gym membership for not going there.
