The German government disagrees with the assessment of the situation in Israel made by the international human rights organization Amnesty International (AI). The German-Israeli Society (DIG) has called on AI to return the Nobel Peace Prize, the ‘Spiegel’ weekly portal reported on Wednesday.
“We reject terms such as apartheid, as well as the one-sided focus on Israel,” – Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said Wednesday, commenting on the AI report. At the same time, Hebestreit warned that with anti-Semitism on the rise in Europe, “anyone who defends human rights has a duty not to encourage it.”
Germany disagrees with Amnesty International report
The Federal Republic of Germany believes that Israel’s expansion of settlements in the Palestinian territories is not right and that a bilateral solution should be sought, a government spokesman said.
In response to AI’s new report on Israel, the German-Israeli Society (DIG) called on the organization to return its Nobel Peace Prize. With its report accusing Israel of “apartheid” against Palestinians, Amnesty has revealed itself “definitively and beyond any doubt as anti-Semitic” – DIG President Uwe Becker stated.
Those who claim that the only democracy in the Middle East is “an apartheid state that treats Palestinians as an +worse race+ are deliberately spreading lies and are not afraid to use Nazi jargon.” – declared Becker. He accused Amnesty International of ignoring “realities” – such as the fact that 20 percent of Israel’s population consists of Palestinians “who are clearly committed to the state of Israel.”
Jews accuse Amnesty International of anti-Semitism
The Central Council of Jews in Germany on Tuesday accused Amnesty International of anti-Semitism and “demonizing” Israel. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said the report contains “lies” spread by “terrorist organizations.”
In a report published Tuesday, Amnesty International claims that Israel treats Palestinians as an inferior racial group and applies apartheid to them, and that segregation in Israel and the Palestinian occupied territories is carried out in a systematic and institutionalized manner.
