The summer between my GCSEs and A Levels. The last taste of freedom I ever enjoyed. I’m sure it’s not just my rose tinted recollection, but I’m certain we had three solid months of glorious weather too.
I was 16 and have so many memories from that summer, although none of them involved football.
96 was magic brit pop and the euroes and david seaman’s multicolored goalie top listening to Three Lions on my Walkman. Pure magic
Rachel Weisz in my summer with Des? Oh yeah!!!
100%
Yes, but only because I was born that summer
I was watching the England-Germany game, feeling very ill. My partner was pressing me to go to the hospital, I said “Alright, but after this game”….
Full time, Extra time, Penalty shoot out, sudden death…
And then my appendix went bang – if Gareth hadn’t skied his shot, it could have been a lot worse.
No idea considering I was only four years old…
It was pretty special. It felt to me that ’99 and 2000 also had their own particularly good vibe, a genuine sense of momentum and optimism.
I was about to turn 9 during this tournament and it’s the first I have a real memory of .. I still remember crying when we got knocked out. Great times!
Remember them silver medallions with the team’s heads on them Sainsbury were giving out? I’ve still got them somewhere!
I’ve said this before, but the decline of the UK started the instant Southgate missed that penalty.
Four years before section 28 ended, and 18 years before I would be legally able to marry who I want to marry?
Yeah, no. Nowhere near the peak for me.
Edit: those downvoting: op asked, and I gave my honest answer. Don’t like it, go suck a lemon.
Me and some guys from school, had a multi-tap, we played real hard. Oh, when I look back now, those LAN parties seemed to last forever. Those were the best days of my life. Oh yeah. The summer of ’96
I was born immediately after – so I would tend to agree with you
I think nearly everyone in the 40 to 50 age bracket will agree
It really went off the cliff edge once and for all immediately after that Trippier free kick went in against Croatia in 2018.
That’s the summer I was born, so I have to agree.
2002 World Cup summer vibes with the BBQ’s and Justin Timberlake bangers was the one for me. Weather was beautiful, bunting was in full flow, life seemed carefree and more together back then
The night we lost to Germany l got run over by a work van on the road outside my house. It broke my femur in half and really fucked me up, I was 6. What a shit night that was!
I would say I agree but don’t remember since I was born in ’99
But I remember how massive Euro 2020 was
One of the 9’s is upside down
Don’t know about peaked, but the summers from around 1992-94 were great we all had super soakers, it was warm but not hot enough that we’d risk getting heatstroke. We’d spend the long summer holidays (they were 8-9 weeks long for us) watching movies i.e. Terminator 2 and playing boardgames plus some Sonic on the Sega mega drive.
As a German, I agree.
That 4-1 Holland evening game (i was 9 n remember it like yday still) was just brilliant.

I can’t say I recall that summer personally, so I shall decline to participate in this debate
21 and had just finished my finals at University. Spent the tournament watching every game, drinking beer, then going out and drinking more beer, before doing it all again (after a greasy breakfast) for the next day.
The 4-1 against the Netherlands is still the greatest game I’ve ever seen England have, Paul Gasgoine’s goal against Scotland one of the best England have ever scored.
The agony when his sliding foot was a millimetre off that golden goal during extra time in the Semi-Final, the heartbreak when Southgate missed and you knew Möller was going to score his.
What a time to be alive.
What is the logo supposed to be? A person kicking a ball?
Caffreys everywhere
I was eight years old and I knew it must have been a special occasion because my older brother and sister’s mates let me in their living room to watch when normally they’d shun me as the annoying baby brother.
The pogs were so good. Think I still have mine.
Definitely
England in that grey away kit 1996 was my first ‘international’ football memory so that tournament holds a special place in my heart.
Wearing that shirt today too
I was at the England v Netherlands game at Wembley and I had one of those plastic Snickers England bowler hats.

The UK?
Yes they peaked in the 90s 😉
