Fines start after two months. Also if you have an accident caused by something which would’ve been noticed during the inspection, your insurance can ask you to pay part of the damage.
German registration doesn’t expire, but it can be revoked if you don’t pay taxes or insurance. This sticker (“HU-Prüfplakette” or “TÜV-Plakette” shows the year and month the car has to go though the next Hauptuntersuchung (general inspection, “TÜV”, even though other institutions like KÜS or Dekra also do Hauptuntersuchung). The registration sticker (“Stempelplakette”) is the other one.
This cars is due for the next Hauptuntersuchung in August 2024.
It’s either the number on top or you can read it like a clock with the black part being the hour hand. You can see that it points to where the 8 would be on a clock.
The latter way is what the police uses when they follow you and want to check if your HU is overdue.
