yeah these are troubling reports because it appears as if and just from initial operational reports that we’ve gotten that at least one Philippine sailor was wounded um I mean you talk about collisions and water cannons and and and you don’t think about the the damage that can do to the human body but let me tell you something it can um and so we’re deeply concerned about the uh the the injury suffered by this Philippine sailor obviously wishing him the best in terms of his recovery but more critically to your question this kind of behavior uh it’s provocative it’s Reckless it’s unnecessary and it could lead to misunderstandings and miscalculations uh that could lead to something uh much bigger and much more violent um it’s imperative that uh that the the rightful legal Maritime claims by the Philippines are respected by the PRC and by everybody else for that matter
The US finds reports of a South China sea collision “troubling” said White House national security spokesperson John Kirby on Monday.
Kirby told reporters the injuries suffered by a sailor from the Philippines during the collision were “deeply concerning.”
The U.S. State Department on Monday condemned what it called “escalatory and irresponsible” actions by China in the South China Sea on Sunday and reaffirmed its support for the Philippines.
China’s coast guard said a Philippine supply ship “deliberately and dangerously” approached a Chinese ship resulting in a slight collision, a charge Manila rejected.
China claims almost the entire South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.
For months, China and the Philippines have traded barbs over dangerous maneuvers and collisions at the Second Thomas Shoal, an atoll within Manila’s 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea.
